Challenges and opportunities to addressing non-communicable diseases after climate-related disasters in Mozambique
INTRODUCTION: Low- and middle-income countries are facing a new double burden: an increasing frequency of extreme weather events that disrupt healthcare services for people living with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and a rising prevalence of NCDs. In Mozambique, NCDs are the second leading cause of death among adults, and climate-related disasters, occurring with increasing intensity, exacerbate this problem. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to unde…
Intersections of climate change, migration, and health
Climate change is an important driver of migration, but little research exists on whether migrant communities in the U.S. identify climate change-related factors as reasons for migrating. Natural disasters, population displacement and health emergencies
In early 2019, following the 2015–2016 severe drought, the provinces of Sofala and Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, were hit by Cyclones Idai and Kenneth, respectively. These were the deadliest and most destructive cyclones in the country’s history. Considerations for Improving Reporting and Analysis of Date-Based Covid-19 Surveillance Data by Public Health Agencies
More than a year after the first domestic COVID-19 cases, the United States does not have national standards for COVID-19 surveillance data analysis and public reporting. This has led to dramatic variations in surveillance practices among public health agencies, which analyze and present newly confirmed cases by a wide variety of dates. The choice of which date to use should be guided by a balance between interpretability and epidemiological rele…
The Social Geography of Zika in Brazil
There is a saying in Brazil: “Mosquitos are democratic; they bite the rich and the poor alike.” While the insects do not have a highly developed sense of class consciousness, the current Zika virus
Mobile Phones for Mobile People
The recent widespread use of mobile communication technologies has sparked considerable interest in their application to social and economic development in low-income countries. In this article we examine the different uses of mobile phones among livestock traders and Borana pastoralists of southern Ethiopia, where increased adoption of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has been recent and shows potential for improvements in local…
A geografia social do zika no Brasil
