The Lithuanian High School Literary Canon
This paper reconstructs the developments of the Lithuanian high school literary canon from 1918 to 2018. Drawing on the theoretical framework of descriptive canon research, attributed to the theoretical field of cultural sociology, we investigate how ideological shifts have shaped education policies as well as the selection and interpretation of literature taught in secondary education over the past hundred years. We argue that the school, more t…
The Limits of the Vernacular
The article analyzes expurgation and euphemization of rough vernacular lexis and phraseologisms in the process of publishing Kristijonas Donelaitis’ works in the 19th–20th centuries. Most frequently, words indicating the processes of physiological excretion, and phraseologisms formed using them were cut out or changed. All cases of euphemization of K. Donelaitis’ vulgarisms are discussed in the article, explaining how they changed the style, sema…
The Lithuanianisation of Adam Mickiewicz
In this article, I analyse the cultural practices applied by Lithuanian interwar intellectuals seeking to Lithuanianise the great Polish romantic poet Adam Mickiewicz. Mickiewicz was born to a family of Polish-speaking nobles in a predominantly Belarusian part of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Because his historically themed works had an impact on the Lithuanian national movement, Lithuanian intellectuals sought ways to attribute Mickiewicz…

Although most intellectuals associated national culture exclusively with the cultural heritage of ethnic Lithuanians and Lithuanian-language writing, a part of the Lithuanian society’s elite opposed the ethno-linguistic approach to Lit…

The paper focuses on the performative and material memorialization (anniversaries, funeral, obituaries in the press, the gravestone, and the memorial museum) ofMaironis (Jonas Mačiulis, 1862–1932) in the 1930s, which contributed to the consolidation of the poet’s position in the national literary canon. It also describes what prevalent meanings of his literary works were being formed by different practices of memorialization. When Maironis died i…
Laikinosios sostinės refleksija Vytauto Sirijos Giros romane Raudonmedžio rojus
Straipsnyje nagrinėjama laikinosios sostinės refleksija Vytauto Sirijos Giros romane Raudonmedžio rojus (1972) traktuojant jį kaip vieną iš literatūrinį tarpukario Kauno tekstą formuojančių kūrinių. Metodologinės straipsnio prieigos glūdi semiotinėje miestotyroje. Didžiausią įtaką straipsnio autorės metodologinėms nuostatoms turi Vladimiro Toporovo darbai (iš jų perimta miesto teksto koncepcija ir mitopoetinė erdvės tyrimo strategija). Straipsnyj…
