Modes of modality
Funktionen von Modalität
The term “modality” encompasses a number of categories: modal verbs, modal particles, and confirmatory questions. This volume examines, on the one hand, the common features of basic modal and epistemic versions of modal verbs, and, on the other, modal particles. What level of certainty do words of this kind communicate to the listener? This is the key question posed by the work.
The Case Differential
In today’s leading discussions on case and its licensing mechanics there is only one approach: the syntagmatic type of case assignment. In contrast, the present article describes patterns of paradigmatic case assignment. Paradigmatic case assignment means that two different m(orphological)‐cases fill one slot licensed for the same theta role, whereas under the strategy of syntagmatic case assignment there is just one case form assigned for one th…
Modality and Theory of Mind Elements across Languages
Modality is the way a speaker modifies her declaratives and other speech acts to optimally assess the common ground of knowledge and belief of the addressee with the aim to optimally achieve understanding and an assessment of relevant information exchange. In languages such as German (and other Germanic languages outside of English), this may happen in covert terms. Main categories used for this purpose are modal adverbials (modal particles) and …

Modality–Aspect Interfaces
The main topics pursued in this volume are based on empirical insights derived from Germanic: logical and typological dispositions about aspect-modality links. These are probed in a variety of non-related languages. The logically establishable links are the following: Modal verbs are aspect sensitive in the selection of their infinitival complements – embedded infinitival perfectivity implies root modal reading, whereas embedded infinitival imper…
Nominal Determination
The following theoretical-empirical points on the DP are discussed: Article and its referential-anaphoric properties by Abraham (Determiners in Centering Theory); Bartra (On bare NPs in Old Spanish and Catalan); identification of all functional nominal categories by Stvan (Bare singular count nouns); Kupisch & Koops (Specificity and negation); Jäger (History of German indefinite determiners); typological comparison of the interaction of nominal a…
Covert patterns of definiteness/indefiniteness and aspectuality in Old Icelandic, Gothic, and Old High German
It is assumed that the rise of the defi nite article is due to changes in the aspectual system of a language. Defi niteness and perfective aspect are shown to be just two instantiations of the same grammatical function. So are indefi niteness and imperfective aspect. Defi nite nouns and perfective verbs share identical mereological features, the same being true for indefinite nouns and imperfective verbs. Thus, defi niteness/indefi niteness and p…

The influence of cholesterol on the main phase transition of unilamellar dipalmytoylphosphatidylcholine vesicles. A differential scanning calorimetry and iodine laser T-jump study
The influence of cholesterol (CHOL) on the main phase transition in single shell dipalmytoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) vesicles was investigated in equilibrium and kinetic experiments. CHOL increases the optical density and causes a slight hysteresis in turbidity transition curves. Static fluorescence anisotropy measurements showed interesting differences for three probes sensing different parts in the hydrophobic region of the phospholipid bilay…
