Anmerkungen zur Funktionsgeltung periphrastischer Vergangenheitsformen des Indikativs im Althochdeutschen
The traditional view that Old High German – like all old West Germania – has two paradigmatized synthetic tense forms, present and past, as well as syntactic constructions with pre-auxiliaries ›have‹ and ›be‹ as – not yet paradigmatized – archetypes of analytical tense forms of the perfect and pluperfect, have been partially relativized in recent research. The tense periphrases are said to have a higher degree of grammaticality than previously as…
Evidentialität in autochthonen altgermanischen Schriftdenkmälern im Vergleich zur deutschen Gegenwartssprache
The paper presents a diachronically based concept of the evidential function in the language. It is argued for a specific discourse evidentiality of the oldest autochthonic German poetry which encoded not epistemic interpretations of outer sources of information, but rather a strong guarantee for the truth of reported events. The origins of this kind of evidentiality can be found both in ontogenesis of a given language, e. g. language acquisition…
Modalność deontyczna w angielskiej, polskiej i rosyjskiej wersji powszechnej deklaracji praw człowieka
The paper attempts to provide an analysis of the phenomenon of grammatical interaction in the categorial area of aspect, tense and deontic modality under the presumption that these three functions are mutually connected with each other and form a setting of overtly or covertly encoded interface. The source text is written in English which is a language without the so called “Slavic-style aspect” i.e. the grammatically denoted opposition between p…
Esthetical heteronomy as creation principle of a fictional narrative
The relations between the “main” narrative parts of a belletristic text and its (cross)references to other works of literature and/or music, painting etc. play an important part in the structure and functioning of a literary work. The phenomenon of intertextuality belongs at present to the favourite subjects of the research of texts, among others, of fictional texts. However, some relevant functions of implementation of external esthetical works,…
Der deutsche Dativ genealogisch und diachron
The German dative case from genealogic and diachronic perspective. A language-change study about the third case. The dative case belongs to the so-called syncretistic cases, i. e., it encodes multiple functions inherited from the Indo-European cases locative, instrumental, ablative and dative. The paper aims to show the emergence of diverse case functions formally encoded by the dative case from a common base which is assumed to have the locative…
Generation change in Russian poetry of the 19th and 20th centuries
The paper attempts to provide an analyses of poetically-encoded discourse about generation change in selected verses written by outstanding Russian poets of the 19th and 20th century – Pushkin, Zhukovsky, Baratynsky, Esenin and Mayakovsky, under a partial comparison with similar motives appearing by the German poet Goethe. The central problem is the axiological assessment of continuity vs. conflict of generations as well as the general confrontat…
Unreal conditional clause and independent clause of optative condition
Aspects of a reconstruction of form and function of modal verbs in Germanic and other languages
Genuine modal verbs in the Germanic languages classify as preterit presents. Since the Germanic preterit derives genetically from the Indo-European perfect and since there is no trace of the original Indo-European present stems of the modal verbs, one generally assumes that these verbal classes were perfecta tantum , i.e., a morphological paradigm of the proto-language lacking any imperfectivepresent corresponding forms. The reconstruction shows …

Article Das Partizip II in hochdeutschen periphrastischen Verbalfügungen im 9. – 15. Jh. Zur Ausbildung des analytischen Sprachbaus was published on January 1, 2000 in the journal Zeitschrift für germanistische Linguistik (volume 28, issue 3).
