Entropy-Based Centralization and its Sampling Distribution in Directed Communication Networks
This article proposes a new measure of network centralization and reports the results of a simulation designed to determine the sampling distribution of the proposed measure. The measure is based on the information-theoretic concept of entropy and is appropriate for those networks in which traffic flows over paths and propagates by means of transference. Tables of critical values are constructed which allow the researcher to conduct tests of sign…
Entropy as a measure of centrality in networks characterized by path-transfer flow
The Persuasive Effects of Message Framing in Organ Donation
The effects of message framing on reactions to campaign messages promoting organ donation were examined in three experiments. It was predicted that gain-framed messages would produce more positive reactions toward organ and tissue donation. In Study 1, students (N=189) responded to either a gain-framed or loss-framed message about organ donation. Study 2 (N=318) and Study 3 (N=433) examined the role of psychological reactance as a mediator betwee…

On the Sensible Application of Familywise Alpha Adjustment
This essay responds to Daniel O'Keefe's "Against Familywise Alpha Adjustment." Whereas O'Keefe maintains that one should never attempt to control Type I error introduced when many statistical tests are conducted, this essay argues that alpha adjustment should be applied only in the narrowly circumscribed instance when the researcher wants to make a strong claim that there is no Type I error in a specific collection of tests
Toughness in Integrative Bargaining
This article introduces a new measure of bargaining toughness. Previous measures of toughness have been based on simple averages and are suitable for use only in situations of distributive bargaining. By contrast, the proposed measure is based on dynamical information and can easily be used in integrative bargaining scenarios. The key to defining such a measure is to utilize the feasible outcome sets of Nash (1950) and to represent the bargainer'…
Exponential Decay and Damped Harmonic Oscillation as Models of the Bargaining Process
Bargaining as a dynamical system
Mathematically based dynamical systems, by producing abstract representations of phenomena that change as a function of time, provide ideal models of diverse physical, biological, and social systems. This paper focuses on bargaining and negotiation, and, as such, deals with decision making in human, dyadic group systems. In particular, bargaining is viewed as an interactive process in which the communications of one bargainer affect those of the …
Toward a theory of disintegration in communication networks
A Catastrophe Theory Model of Child Abuse
This article presents a formal mathematical model of child abuse based upon elementary catastrophe theory, a branch of differential topology. It was found that child abuse, when viewed as discontinuity in parent-child relations, could be successfully modeled by a five-dimensional butterfly catastrophe composed of four control parameters: stress, extrafamilial communication, attachment behavior, and parental history. Implications of the model for …
