Bilingual spelling patterns in middle school
This study examined the Spanish and English spelling patterns of bilingual adolescents, including the cross-linguistic effects of each language, by applying a fine-grained measure to the differences in spelling in naturalistic writing. Spelling errors were taken from narrative and expository writing samples provided by 20 Spanish–English bilingual adolescents (n = 160). Errors were coded by categories (phonological, orthographic, and morphologica…
The Influence of Signal Complexity on Speaker Identification
Multiple factors may affect a listener’s ability to identify a particular voice. For example, speaker eff ects such as language and dialect have been shown to negatively impact speaker identifi cation accuracy (Bahr and Frisch 2002, Doty 1998). Mechanical eff ects such as communication channel (i.e. cell phone, land line) have also been shown to negatively impact voice identifi cation (Künzel 2001). However, the contribution of these factors to s…
The influence of style-shifting on voice identification
Alterations in speaking style, and associated problems, are commonly found in criminal investigations. Typically, the recorded samples have been made in two different environments; during the crime and then during police questioning. These inherent differences in situation, lead to the possibility that the style of speech also is changed. This project was developed to evaluate one of the problems that results, that is, the influence of code-switc…
