    This study explores the interaction between pragmatic and phonetic variation, investigating the usage of just in British English. Based on an acoustic and auditory phonetic analysis of 1,260 tokens of just spoken by 100 male speakers of Standard Southern British English, I argue that speakers utilise phonetic resources to indicate pragmatic meaning alongside predictable contextual effects.   • Yeah, but how? Operationalizing the functions of the discourse-pragmatic marker yeah

    Discourse-pragmatic markers (DPMs) such as yeah are known for their multifunctionality, leading to challenges in coding for function in quantitative analyses. We provide an account of the incremental creation of a functional taxonomy for the DPM yeah using a decision tree and multilevel inter-rater reliability testing.
