  • Ideological Diversity, Intelligibility and Electoral Design: A Deliberative Perspective

    Dominique Leydet•ARTICLE•Representation•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 30

The article explores some trade-offs between two democratic goods: intelligibility and ideological diversity that different types of electoral systems – proportional representation and single member plurality – often involve through the way in which they affect the number of significant political parties in a polity. The article reviews practices that can alleviate those trade-offs and provides a sketch of what we can and should want to achieve w…

  • The power to consent: Indigenous peoples, states, and development projects

    Dominique Leydet•ARTICLE•University of Toronto Law Journal•2019•References: 13

The principle of free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) has become increasingly important in Indigenous peoples’ rights discourse. But continuing debates over the meaning of consent show the need for further clarification. In Part I of the article, I give a brief description of consent’s ‘standard grammar’ as developed in other areas of Western legal and ethical discourse to clarify what those who use the language of consent within that traditio…

  • Which conception of political equality do deliberative mini-publics promote

    Open Access•Dominique Leydet•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•2019•Cited by: 9•References: 34

In democratic political systems, political equality is often defined as an equality of opportunity for influence. But inequalities in resources and status affect the capacity of disadvantaged citizens to achieve an effective political equality. One common thread running through recent democratic innovations is the belief that appropriate institutional devices and procedures can alleviate the impact of background inequalities on the presence and v…

  • Deliberative Democracy in Practice

David Kahane, Daniel Weinstock et al.•BOOK•Deliberative Democracy in Practice•2010

Deliberative democracy is a dominant paradigm in normative political philosophy. Deliberative democrats want politics to be more than a clash of contending interests, and believe that political decisions should emerge from reasoned dialogue among citizens. But can these ideals be realized in complex and unjust societies? Deliberative Democracy in Practice brings together leading scholars who explore debates in deliberative democratic theory in fo…

  • Compromise and Public Debate in Processes of Constitutional Reform: The Canadian Case

    Open Access•Dominique Leydet•ARTICLE•Social Science Information•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 14

In this article, I concentrate on one central issue that has arisen since the 1987 Meech Lake Accord and the 1992 Charlottetown Accord failed to secure sufficient popular support to allow their ratification. Many theorists have argued that there exists an unavoidable disjunction between the kind of compromise agreement that can come out of complex intergovernmental negotiations and the type of outcome that a majority of citizens might be made to …

    Open Access•Dominique Leydet•ARTICLE•Dialogue•1995•References: 2

    Open Access•Dominique Leydet•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Political…•1993•References: 2

Can a phenomenological analysis of political reality tackle the issue of norms? We try to answer this question through an analysis of the opposition between Luc Ferry and Alain Renaut's Kantian philosophy of human rights and the phenomenological approach of Claude Lefort. Lefort's project is an attempt to elucidate reality and not to justify principles. But the normative dimension is not entirely absent from his thought. Lefort conceives of human…

    Open Access•Dominique Leydet•ARTICLE•Dialogue•1992•References: 1
