New data on Ditch 5 from the site of Marroquíes (Jaén, Spain): Its use in the last phases of a funerary rite
This study presents the results of an archaeological intervention (area RU-1 (1-2-3)/SUNP-1) in the city of Jaén (Andalusia, Spain) on a sector of the vast prehistoric site of Marroquíes. The excavation specifically explored a segment of Ditch 5, one of several concentric ditches forming part of the vast enclosure. As elsewhere at the site, this ditch is characterized by a trough-shaped section and, although there is no evidence of a flanking wal…
Mining tools from the prehistoric quarries in Serra Llarga (NE Iberia): Preliminary results from lithological and techno-morphological approaches
The Role of Aerial Prospection for Monitoring and Preserving Cultural Heritage in Northeastern Africa
Anthropogenic and environmental processes present unique challenges for preserving cultural heritage in North Africa. Large parts of this region are characterised by unfavourable arid and semi-arid conditions and rapid changes to the landscapes caused by heightened regional development (e.g., urban expansion, road building, agricultural intensification, and socio-political conflicts). As a result, we are facing a fast-paced disappearance of herit…
Building an Integrated Database of North-Eastern African Archaeological and Heritage Sites for Mapping Complex Social Landscapes
This dataset contains archaeological and heritage sites of the Marmarica region (NE-Libya/NW-Egypt), ranging from the Late Bronze to the Roman times. It has been developed in the framework of the PERAIA project, which aims to analyse the long-term history and interaction patterns along the harsh environments of north-eastern Africa. The records contain accurate geographic location of sites, including place names, typology, chronology, and metadat…
Assessing the Perceptibility of Prehistoric Monuments on their Landscape. An Exploratory Approach Using Agent-Based Modelling
The perceptibility of a prehistoric monument (the property of being perceptible from its surrounding landscape) can be quite difficult to analyse by means of traditional static models. Such difficulty lies in the fact that perceptibility depends upon many other factors beyond simple topographical position, such as size, colour, contrast with the surroundings or even the specific circumstances of the audience, many such circumstances being of an i…
In the land of tin men? Warrior stelae, mobility, and interaction in western Iberia during the Late Prehistory
The warrior stelae, also called southwestern stelae or western stelae, emerge as one of the most characteristic manifestations of the Bronze Age in Iberia. Since the earliest findings more than a century ago, these monoliths have received great attention from scholars, becoming the subject of an intense debate, without a consensus having been reached on their meaning and sense. A slow but steady trickle of new findings, as well as the implementat…
A prehistoric jade axe from Galicia (Northwestern Iberia): Researching its origin
The Vilapedre axe (Lugo, Northwest Iberia) has been traditionally considered by archaeologists as evidence of prehistoric long-distance contacts along the Atlantic Coast of France and Spain. This artefact - as other “Tumiac type” axes (long polished blades, generally butt-perforated) - would have been produced in Brittany during the Neolithic (5th millennium BCE) using jadeitite as raw material, a green-coloured rock for which there are sources i…
Locational preferences and spatial arrangement in the barrow landscape of Serra do Barbanza (North-western Iberia)
As anywhere else around the world, GIS is an essential tool in Galician Archaeology (NW Spain) when examining and analysing spatial data. This is also true for the study of mounds in that area, since spatial analysis and statistics have become increasingly used for contrasting hypotheses regarding the locational preferences of these monuments, usually inferred from observations made during fieldwork or taken from studies conducted elsewhere. Draw…
After the fire: The end of a house life-cycle at the Iron Age site of Nabás (North-western Iberia)
Real and ideal European maritime transfers along the Atlantic coast during the Neolithic
The history of research on the Neolithic of the Atlantic façade shows how speculation about prehistoric mobility, especially across the sea, is mainly based on three types of archaeological evidence: megalithic monuments, rare stones, and pottery decoration. With the aim of approaching the issue from other perspectives, we have focused on the Morbihan area, a focal point of the European Neolithic during the mid-5th millennium BC. The analysis of …
The ‘Historiated’ Neolithic Stele of Saint-Samson-sur-Rance (Côtes-d'Armor, France)
The stone of Saint-Samson is a Neolithic stele of 70 tons and 10 m of probable length. Its intriguing leaning position and its very regular morphology have aroused curiosity since medieval times. Three of its four faces—oriented towards the cardinal points—display engravings that were discovered in the 1970s. Now, a new recording protocol has combined 2D techniques for emphasizing the contrast of the engravings (oblique rotating lights) and 3D me…
Ever since first published in 1970, Palazuelo de las Cuevas (Zamora) became known as “the va- riscite source” for nw Iberia. Later geological surveys and casual finds have shown this mineral to be much more widespread, including other localities in Zamora, Northern Portugal (Tras-os-Montes), Western León (Bierzo) and Eastern and Southwest Galicia (Ourense and Pontevedra). Still, the evidence of prehistoric mining is little known, perhaps due to t…

We deal with an interesting prehistoric petroglyph recently recorded, displaying the common circular combinations and also less usual motifs such as spirals or a possible idol. Otherwise, it is by no means frequent that a decorated stone, located away from the coastline, should show a relatively high number of zoomorphic representations (mostly deer), a number of them apparently in close association with the idol-like motif. We have made use of L…

A media luz.

The Exploitation of Local Lithic Resources During the Late Prehistory of Northwest Iberian Peninsula
This paper explores the basic characteristics affecting the mechanical behavior of non-flint rocks, such as quartz and slate, during knapping. The impact of some of these features, such as anisotropy, cleavage, and the morphostructure on the selection and exploitation processes of quartz and slate is addressed through the analysis of the flaked assemblages of five Late Prehistory sites from NW Iberia. We suggest that the presence of characteristi…
