Paso Otero 1, in the Pampas of Argentina, is a stratified, riverine site containing alluvium with a sequence of buried A-horizons and two guanaco bone beds. The site is the first-recorded guanaco kill/butchering locale for the Pampas and represents at least two events during different times. Bulk organic sediment samples were taken from the three buried A-horizons and the humates assayed to produce a chronology for the site and date the cultural …

  • Reconstructing the Deep Population History of Central and South America

Open Access•Cosimo Posth, Nathan Nakatsuka et al.•ARTICLE•Cell•2018

We report genome-wide ancient DNA from 49 individuals forming four parallel time transects in Belize, Brazil, the Central Andes, and the Southern Cone, each dating to at least ∼9,000 years ago. The common ancestral population radiated rapidly from just one of the two early branches that contributed to Native Americans today. We document two previously unappreciated streams of gene flow between North and South America. One affected the Central And…

In this paper, we present the results of the geoarchaeological studies carried out in two archaeological localities of the Upper Delta of the Paraná River (Argentina). The main objective of these studies is to depict the pre-Hispanic strategies involved in the colonization and settlement of southern South America wetlands. Paraná Delta is one of the most conspicuous areas of these lowlands and comprises a large wetland macrosystem. Its current ge…

  • Gender, Power, and Mobility Among the Awá-Guajá (Maranhão, Brazil)

Almudena Hernando, Gustavo G Politis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•2011•Cited by: 13•References: 43

The Awá (also known as Guajá) are hunter-gatherers whose way of life prior to their first contact with Brazilian society has been altered after relocation to a reservation. Basically, their mobility is reduced and they have been forced to start cultivation. Although these changes are beginning to affect women's social role, the traditional power relationships can still be inferred from the present conditions. The aim of this paper is twofold: (1)…
