Migration intention and Indigenous social networks in the place of origin: A socio-centric network analysis in the rural western highlands of Guatemala
Social Network Impacts and Moderators of Depression Among Indigenous Maya People Remaining in Place of Origin in the Migrant-Sending Guatemalan Western Highlands
Remaining in the place of origin while family, friends, and neighbors emigrate can have adverse effects on psychological well-being. Specific important relationships absent from one's social network can be especially impactful, while other relationships and network characteristics still available in the home network can be protective against psychological distress. The highlands of western Guatemala experience emigration at high rates and changin…
When do no harm becomes harm done: Re-centering ethics in anthropology
As we continue to define anthropology for the 21st century, I argue that ethics-what we mean by ethics, how we invoke ethics, and how we demonstrate our ethics-should be at the center of our conversation. Through this presidential address, I offer a challenge to center an ethics of care in our work that derives not from the Common Rule or broad policies of US institutions, but rather is derived from our responsibility for the impact of our action…
Through our own eyes and voices: The experiences of those “left-behind” in rural, indigenous migrant-sending communities in western Guatemala
Migration from Central America to the United States has become a strategy to escape economic poverty, exclusionary state policies and violence for people of Mayan descent. Under the principles Community Based Participatory Research, we explored the health concerns of Indigenous Mayans in rural migrant-sending communities of Guatemala using their own visual images and narratives through a Social Constructivist lens. Half of households in the study…

Deportation and mental health among migrants who inject drugs along the US–Mexico border
This study describes the prevalence and factors of depressive symptoms among a sample of persons who inject drugs (PWID) with a history of deportation from the US in Tijuana, Mexico. In 2014, 132 deported PWID completed a structured questionnaire. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Short Depression Scale (CESD-10) screening instrument. Eligible participants were ≥18 years old, injected drugs in the past m…

Las fronteras del sabor: Taste as Consciousness, Kinship, and Space in the Mexico–U.S. Borderlands

Navigating changing food environments – Transnational perspectives on dietary behaviours and implications for nutrition counselling
United States (US) migrants are often characterised as experiencing unhealthy nutrition transitions. 'Looking-back' into dietary behaviours and the processes that affect dietary changes before migration may improve counselling interventions. We conducted a qualitative study of an indigenous Zapotecan transnational community based in Monterey, California, and Oaxaca, Mexico. Four focus groups and 29 interviews were conducted with transnational par…
Crossing the border from boyhood to manhood: Male youth experiences of crossing, loss, and structural violence as unaccompanied minors
Despite the immense literature that exists on the dilemmas and unjust practices surrounding migration, little has been written about the youth who make migratory journeys on their own or who are separated from their adult companions along the way. Termed ‘Unaccompanied Alien Children’ by Homeland Security, the experiences of these youth provide insight into how immigration policies are enacted and how they reflect national views on the poor and m…
Narratives from the other side: The revelations and dynamics of a bi-national penpal program in border spaces
This essay brings to life the way in which a binational penpal program between two fourth grade classrooms in an upper middle class San Diego suburban community and a poor, rural artisan community in Oaxaca served to illuminate the differential ways in which children do and do not engage with racial rhetoric and narratives of fear surrounding the 'other'. The essay centers on three important issues: (1) Parents' fears of the Other that are embedd…
Savoring the Taste of Home: The Pervasiveness of Lead Poisoning From Ceramic and Its Implications in Transnational Care Packages
The Mexican State has known for decades that its rural ceramic producing communities have had to increase the lead content of their glaze in response to lower grade fuel supplies for their adobe kilns. This has resulted in increased Blood Lead Levels (BLLs) among their poorer populations who not only produce the ceramic but also depend on it as their primary source of cookware. Lead is a subtle crippler that produces many health maladies that mim…

Cocinas Públicas: Food and Border Consciousness in Greater Mexico
Food is fundamental to the workings of identity and belonging, power, and social change. This special issue of Food & Foodways addresses such critical concepts by exploring cocinas públicas of Greater Mexico. We locate this investigation of Mexican foodways within the contexts of social hierarchy, spatial division, political economy, narrative, identity, and place. Articles in this volume address some of the following questions: How do public foo…
Challenges to Motherhood: The Moral Economy of Oaxacan Ceramic Production and the Politics of Reproduction
In less than two decades, female ceramic artisans of Santa María Atzompa, Oaxaca, Mexico (Atzompeñas), have become integral political and economic actors in their community as a result of a dialectic that has allowed a redefinition of motherhood and a renegotiation of traditional maternal responsibility to family and community. They have been able to accomplish this by invoking a responsibility toward reproduction that moves beyond the biological…
The Misunderstanding of Mexican Community Life in Urban Apartment Space: A Case Study in Applied Anthropology and Community Policing
The increasing diversity of our urban centers has created a growing stress on social service based entities such as schools, medical facilities, workforce agencies, police forces, and urban planners. Anthropology's collaboration with many of these service agencies has been significant but has rarely included police forces. Recent changes in the philosophy and mission of police agencies toward a more community based and collaborative framework pro…
