Digital Literacy, Intergenerational Relationships, and Future Care Preparation in Aging Chinese Adults in Hong Kong
As populations continue to age, the demand for future care is expected to increase. Future care preparation is a form of proactive coping that can prevent or offset potential stressors related to the changing needs of older adults. Acquisition and preservation of resources are essential for effective proactive coping. Integrating social convoy theory, intergenerational solidarity theory, and proactive coping theory, this study assessed the level …
Moral Development during Emerging Adulthood
Moral development during emerging adulthood is a topic of growing interest. Several different theories within the study of human development appear to converge on this point of inquiry, as the study of moral development during emerging adulthood recruits different areas of expertise. This paper explores different theoretical approaches to the study of moral development during emerging adulthood and demonstrates the need for interdisciplinary coll…
Depressive and Anxiety Symptoms in Older Adults With Auditory, Vision, and Dual Sensory Impairment
Objective: The objective of the study is to examine the association of auditory, vision, and dual sensory impairment with late-life depressive and anxiety symptoms. Method: Our study included 7,507 older adults from the National Health & Aging Trends Study, a nationally representative sample of U.S. Medicare beneficiaries. Auditory and vision impairment were determined by self-report, and depressive and anxiety symptoms were evaluated by the two-…
The effects of familism on intended care arrangements in the process of preparing for future care among one-child parents in urban China
Guided by Sörensen and Pinquart's model of preparation for future care, this study investigated the relationship between familism and intended care arrangements. Ordinal logistic regression was performed on a sample of 516 urban Chinese one-child parents aged 45–65 with an equal gender ratio to examine the associations between five care expectations, familism (filial obligation and child gender) and future care planning constructs (awareness, inf…
Family Support and Preparation for Future Care Needs Among Urban Chinese Baby Boomers
The role of family support in PFC is more subtle than simply increasing and decreasing resource volumes. Future research is needed to better understand this complexity
Spouses, adult children, and children-in-law as caregivers of older adults
The present meta-analysis integrates the results from 168 empirical studies on differences between caregiving spouses, adult children, and children-in-law. Spouses differ from children and children-in-law significantly with regard to sociodemographic variables; also, they provide more support but report fewer care recipient behavior problems. Spouse caregivers report more depression symptoms, greater financial and physical burden, and lower level…
How Are Personality Traits Related to Preparation for Future Care Needs in Older Adults
We investigated associations between personality and health cognitions and behaviors related to preparation for future care among 355 primary care patients who were 65 years of age and older. Path analyses examined the effects of the personality traits of neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness on health cognitions about future care (avoidance, awareness), health-planning behaviors (gathering inform…
Preparation for Future Care Needs by Parents Providing Care for their Adult Offspring with Disabilities
Older adults who provide care for an adult child with a disability have rarely been considered when investigating propensity to plan for future care. Families in these circumstances are at risk of experiencing a crisis as these caregiving parents experience personal health challenges. This study investigated influences on the plans made by adults caring for adult offspring with a disability for their own as well their offspring's future care. Res…
Gender Differences in Caregiver Stressors, Social Resources, and Health
This meta-analysis integrates results from 229 studies on gender differences in caregiver psychological and physical health, caregiving stressors, and social resources. Contrary to common perceptions, gender differences in caregiving variables were small to very small. Women had higher levels of burden and depression, and lower levels of subjective well-being and physical health. They reported that their care recipient had more behavioral problem…
Personality and Perceived Health in Older Adults
Responses to specific questions tapping perceived health are associated with morbidity, mortality, and the use of health services, yet there has been little research on their personality correlates. We examined the associations between Five Factor Model personality traits and responses to four items extracted from the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 in 266 primary care patients who were 65 years of age or older. Multivariate analyses control…
Ethnic Differences in Stressors, Resources, and Psychological Outcomes of Family Caregiving
We investigated ethnic differences in caregiver background variables, objective stressors, filial obligations beliefs, psychological and social resources, coping processes, and psychological and physical health. We used a meta-analysis to integrate the results of 116 empirical studies.Ethnic minority caregivers had a lower socioeconomic status, were younger, were less likely to be a spouse, and more likely to receive informal support. They provide…

Associations of Stressors and Uplifts of Caregiving With Caregiver Burden and Depressive Mood
In the present meta-analysis, we integrated findings from 228 studies on the association of six caregiving-related stressors and caregiving uplifts with burden and depressed mood. Care recipients' behavior problems showed stronger associations with caregiver outcomes than other stressors did. The size of the relationships varied by sample characteristics: Amount of care provided and care receivers' physical impairments were less strongly related …

How Effective Are Interventions With Caregivers? An Updated Meta-Analysis
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of interventions for family caregivers of older adults. DESIGN AND METHODS: Meta-analysis was used to synthesize the effects of 78 caregiver intervention studies for six outcome variables and six types of interventions. RESULTS: The combined interventions produced a significant improvement of 0.14 to 0.41 standard deviation units, on average, for caregiver burden, depression, s…
Factors That Promote and Prevent Preparation for Future Care Needs
The risk of needing help with household tasks or of requiring care in old age increases. Using semi-structured, qualitative interviews, beliefs about the usefulness versus uselessness of planning ahead for future care needs (FCN) were investigated in 23 East German, 10 U.S., and 10 Canadian elderly-community dwelling women (> or= 65 years). Primary reasons in favor of planning for FCN were: gaining a feeling of security regarding the future, avoi…
Preparation for Death and Preparation for Care in Older Community-Dwelling Adults
Preparation for one's death (e.g., having signed a will, having made preparations for one's funeral) and preparation for future care needs (e.g., having selected a source of support) were investigated in 593 United States and 582 German independently living seniors. The older adults reported higher levels of preparation for death than preparation for care. The lower level of preparation for care is interpreted as reflecting the uncertainty whethe…
Gender Differences in Self-Concept and Psychological Well-Being in Old Age
Because of women's higher risk of being widowed, having health problems, and needing care, one might expect them to have a more negative self-concept and lower subjective well-being (SWB). However, women may also have greater access to sources of SWB (e.g., relations to adult children) and may engage in processes to protect the self (e.g., lowered aspirations). Meta-analysis was used to synthesize findings from 300 empirical studies on gender dif…

Vulnerability and Access to Resources as Predictors of Preparation for Future Care Needs in the Elderly
Objective:To identify whether vulnerability and resources predict preparation for future care needs in two samples that differ with respect to access to resources. Methods:Community-dwelling elderly from Utah and Thuringia (eastern Germany) who did not yet require care received questionnaires assessing long-and short-term care plans as well as their vulnerability and resources. Results:In both samples, greater activities of daily living (ADL) def…
Preparation for Future Care Needs by West and East German Older Adults
The results suggest that preparation for future care needs may be conceptualized as a successive process. Some individuals, however, may skip steps in the preparation process. For example, relatives may offer to provide care before the older adult has to decide among her or his options
