    Open Access•Yana Penkova•ARTICLE•Vestnik Volgogradskogo…•2024

The paper examines the semantic evolution of the verbs imati and brati in the 11th – 17th century Russian writing. The research is based on the data from Old and Middle Russian subcorpora of the Russian National Corpus. It is argued that the verb imati gradually lost its iterative semantics and its correlation with the verb yati and claimed the role of an aspectual pair of the verb vzyati. The verb vzimati did not compete for performing the funct…

  • “Irregular” -ě- after hushing sibilants in verbal suffixes in Middle Russian writing

    Open Access•Yana Penkova, Yana A Penʹkova•ARTICLE•Slovene•2018

The paper attempts to identify the causes of the phonetically irregular -ě- after hushing sibilants in verbal suffixes in Middle Russian writing. The author suggests treating this linguistic fact as a systemic one, not connected with the spelling tradition of the southern Slavs, since most of these verbs occur in vernacular sources. With the use of the material from the Dictionary of the Russian language of the XI‒XVII centuries, 13 verbs with th…

The construction is semantically and structurally similar to the Slavic perfect and the Slavic future perfect, however it is attested only in some archaic translated Church Slavonic monuments represented by East Slavic copies from the…
