The cult of the dead in Medieval Europe: Revisiting a Historiographical Theme in Times of Crisis
Between November 2019 and the end of 2021, our planet lived a strange and singular daily life dictated by unexpected circumstances. During the epidemic caused by the spread of COVID-19, the daily news began with death tolls. For the first time in most of our lives, this wasn’t counting the number of victims of war, massacres or natural disasters. The deaths tallied during that period were, instead, the result of the spread of a respiratory virus,…
The Uses of the Middle Ages in the Construction of European Regional and National Identities (Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries)
The Convent of Lorvão and its patronage of urban parishes in Coimbra during the Middle Ages: São Bartolomeu and São Pedro
The Convent of Lorvão held the right of patronage over about two dozen parish churches, distributed over several dioceses. This situation implied that the conventual community had the ability to recruit a group of clerics that guaranteed the spiritual and temporal administration of those churches under its tutelage. This article examines the exercise of Lorvão’s right of patronage over two collegiate churches in Coimbra during the Middle Ages (10…
Borders of Ecclesiastical Power in the Medieval City: The Perception of Coimbra’s Parochial Network through the Case of the Parish of the Monastery of Santa Cruz (Eleventh to Fourteenth Centuries)
Death Commemoration Strategies in Medieval Portugal: A Mirror of Lay Participation in Religious Parochial Life (The Case of Coimbra)
This article will, through the analysis of three parishes in Coimbra between the twelfth and the fourteenth century, investigate practices surrounding the commemoration of death. Through the study of extant wills, post-mortem donations, and necrological documents-such as Obituaries and Anniversary Books-this work seeks to describe the populations and communities who entrusted their final salvation to these churches. This characterization will all…

The medieval Portuguese city displayed a multiplicity of structures and equipment necessary for the subsistence of its inhabitants, that gave them a plural landscape where rural and urban elements lived together. In this paper, we argue on the elements denouncing this situation and explore how it would materialize in Coimbra and how it was framed by the national context of the time. Based on the latest works about this town, and the set of docume…
