  • Longitudinal Sars-CoV-2 seroprevalence among learners, parents, and teachers in a South African school community

Open Access•Reshmi Dassaye, Terusha Chetty et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Introduction Longitudinal assessments of SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence among a triad of parents, teachers and children in low-middle income countries are scarce. CoKiDSS assessed changes in seroprevalence among asymptomatic primary school learners, their parents, and teachers in a semi-rural South African school setting. Methods SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence was estimated at baseline (May–August 2023) and follow-up (October 2023) using a point-of-care CO…

  • Sars-CoV-2 seroprevalence among learners in grades 1–7, their parents and teachers in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Open Access•Reshmi Dassaye, Terusha Chetty et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Introduction: There is limited information on SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence among children and adolescents in LMIC school settings. We aimed to assess (1) the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, (2) prevalence of self-reported or confirmed SARS-CoV-2 prior infections and, (3) COVID-19 symptoms (including long-COVID) among a cohort of primary school learners, their parents and teachers in a semi-rural school setting approximately 3-years into the…

  • Safety and immunogenicity after a 30-month boost of a subtype C Alvac-HIV (vCP2438) vaccine prime plus bivalent subtype C gp120/MF59 vaccine boost (HVTN 100)

Open Access•Vimla Naicker, Fatima Laher et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

Induction of broad, durable immune responses is a challenge in HIV vaccine development. HVTN 100 Part A administered subtype C-containing ALVAC-HIV at months 0 and 1, and ALVAC-HIV with bivalent subtype C gp120/MF59 at months 3, 6 and 12. As IgG binding antibody and T-cell responses were similar or greater at month 12.5 vs. month 6.5, but waned by month 18, we investigated vaccine-elicited immune responses after a month 30 boost in this study, HV…

  • Getting to under 1% vertical HIV transmission

Open Access•Brodie Daniels, Elizabeth Spooner et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2022

We report here on the transmission of HIV in a cohort of breastfeeding infants enrolled in a prevention of mother to child HIV transmission (PMTCT) programme at the epicentre of the HIV pandemic. South Africa implemented option B+ for PMTCT in 2015. Between 2013 and 2018, we enrolled 1219 infants born to HIV positive women into a non-inferiority trial assessing the current cotrimoxazole prophylaxis guidelines for HIV-exposed uninfected infants. B…

  • Point-of-care CD4 testing

Open Access•Elizabeth Spooner, Tarylee Reddy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2022

BACKGROUND: ) persists, and CD4 count testing is being overlooked since universal test-and-treat was implemented. Point-of-care CD4 testing could address this gap and assure differentiated care to these vulnerable patients with low CD4 counts. METHODS: A time randomised implementation trial was conducted, enrolling 603 HIV positive non-ART, not pregnant patients at a primary health care clinic in Durban, South Africa. Weeks were randomised to eit…

  • Women and HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa

Open Access•Gita Ramjee, Brodie Daniels•ARTICLE•AIDS Research and Therapy•2013

Thirty years since the discovery of HIV, the HIV pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa accounts for more than two thirds of the world's HIV infections. Southern Africa remains the region most severely affected by the epidemic. Women continue to bear the brunt of the epidemic with young women infected almost ten years earlier compared to their male counterparts. Epidemiological evidence suggests unacceptably high HIV prevalence and incidence rates among …
