Productivity of denominal and deadjectival suffixal nouns in the Joint Corpus of Lithuanian
We explore the derivational productivity of the following salient suffixes of Lithuanian denominal and deadjectival nouns on the basis of the Joint Corpus of Lithuanian (1.3 billion tokens): -um-as, -yb-ė, -yst-ė, -izm-as, -inink-as (-ė), -uol-is (-ė), -ist-as (-ė), -el-is (-ė), -ėl-is (-ė), -(i)uk-as (-ė). We estimate realized, expanding, and potential productivity (Baayen 1992; 1993) and compare our results to the productivity rankings found in…
How lemmatisation and derivational annotation affect productivity measures
We discuss the automatic and manual stages of the lemmatisation and annotation of the Joint Corpus of Lithuanian (1.3 billion words) used to measure derivational productivity. As a case study, we present data of three productive deverbal agent noun suffixes in Lithuanian, -toj-, -ėj-, -ik-, and measure their realized, expanding, and potential productivity. We show that an additional semi-automatic lemmatisation and a manual derivational annotatio…
Productivity of deverbal suffixal nouns in the Joint Corpus of Lithuanian
We use the Joint Corpus of Lithuanian (1.3 billion tokens) to estimate the derivational productivity of the main suffixes of deverbal nouns in Lithuanian. We measure their realized, expanding, and potential productivity (Baayen 1992; 1993) and compare our rankings to the ones found in the main grammars and studies of neologisms. In general, the ordering of the suffixes according to their realized and expanding productivity is similar to the one f…
Periphrastic causative constructions in 16 th –17 th c. Lithuanian
This study analyzes periphrastic permissive and factitive causative constructions in a corpus of 16th and 17th century Old Lithuanian texts. In contrast to modern use, permissive constructions with duoti play a central role in many texts, while those with leisti are only more frequent in some sources and appear to have spread from the east to the west. Due to the influence of bifunctional German lassen constructions, duoti is used not only in per…
Periphrastic causative constructions in Baltic
Periphrastic causatives in Latvian, Lithuanian, and Old Prussian are discussed to differentiate shared and language-specific constructions. It is shown that factitive constructions evolved independently, while the permissive ones are partly shared. One of the possible reasons for this is that the Baltic languages had a productive category of morphological factitive causatives and periphrastic factitives were less salient in the past. In contrast,…
On the development of past habitual from iterative in Lithuanian
Lithuanian has regular past habitual forms with the suffix -dav-, which can be explained as an originally iterative suffix -dau- restricted to the past tense (Fraenkel 1936). Dialectal and Old Lithuanian, in addition to -dav-, also feature habituals with the suffixes -lav- and -dlav-, which could have followed the same path of development (Fraenkel 1936), as evidenced by a number of diverse languages (Bybee et al. 1994). Using an electronic editi…
Old Prussian dāt ‘give’ in causative and hortative constructions
Extended uses of Old Prussian dāt ‘give’ are studied to demonstrate independent and German-influenced developments. The permissive function of this predicate is argued to be original and historically and areally shared by Baltic, Slavic and Finnic languages, while factitive and hortative constructions are regarded as copies of corresponding German lassen-constructions. The German influence is also seen in the coding of the causee when it is marke…
Morphological adaptation of adjectival borrowings in modern Lithuanian
This paper discusses morphological adaptation of borrowed adjectives in modern Lithuanian. Five types of adaptation are identified: zero adaptation, assignment to inflection class (IC), addition of the derivational suffix, substitution of the derivational suffix, and truncation of the derivational suffix. It is shown that the selection of ICs for borrowings is determined by the register (standard vs. non-standard) and the source language (English…
Verbal morphology in the Database of New Borrowings into Lithuanian
The Database of New Borrowings into Lithuanian lists 129 verbs which were either directly borrowed or derived from the borrowed nominal and adjectival stems. In terms of morphosyntactic adaptation, two suffixes, viz. uo ti and in ti, are used as indirect insertion strategy devices (Wohlgemuth 2009: 94 ff.). The suffix uo ti is the most productive verbalizer in modern Lithuanian and is predominantly used to integrate the so called internationalism…

The relation between the suffixes of denominal verbs and the inflection classes of their base nouns in modern Lithuanian It is well known that Lithuanian verbal suffixes -ėti, -y-ti, -o-ti, and -uo-ti are historically related to nominal stems ē, ī, ā, and o respectively. At an earlier stage, the suffix *-éó was added to nominal stems and this addition simply transferred them to the class of verbs without any predictable derivational meaning (cf.…

Latvian secondary verbs based on sta-presents In an earlier paper (Pakerys 2007), I presented a number of Lithuanian secondary verbal formations which are based on sta-presents, cf.: vargst‐áuti ‘to live in trouble, to have difficulties’, rūkst‐ė́ti ‘to emit smoke’, linkst‐úoti ‘to bend (intr.)’ beside var̃g‐st‐a ‘lives in poverty, takes trouble’, rū̃k‐st‐a ‘emits smoke’, liñk‐st‐a ‘bends (intr.)’, etc. I suggested that these formations could sup…

DENOMINATIVE STATIVES IN -ėti IN MODERN LITHUANIAN Denominative verbs in -ėti, -ėja are predominantly inchoative in Modern Lithuanian (senė́ti, -ė́ja ‘to become old’ : sẽnas ‘old’, akmenė́ti, -ė́ja ‘to harden, to turn into stone’ : akmuõ, -eñs ‘stone’). There is a relatively small group of synchronically or diachronically analyzable denominatives in -ėti which have stative meaning. I have tried to compile a preliminary list of these verbs from th…

Dėl lietuvių kalbos mišriųjų veiksmažodžių kamienų santykių ir darybos
ON LITHUANIAN MIXED TYPE VERBS: STEM RELATIONS AND DERIVATION I have argued in this article that Lithuanian mixed type verbs are in fact suffixed verbs with alternating suffixal morphs which sometimes surface as zeroes (see Table l; cf. Andronov 1999, 73-75; 2000a, 42f). According to the morphemic structure of their stems all Lithuanian verbs split into two major classes of non suffixed vs. suffixed. The latter ones make up two subclasses dependi…
