  • External Threat and Dynamic Shifts in Ukrainian National Identity (2021–2022)

  • Measuring and validating the Ukrainian ethnic coherence instrument

    Scott Feinstein•ARTICLE•Post-Soviet Affairs•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 71

To assess Ukrainian ethnic coherence, scholars have employed single-item scales such as language preference and national identity. In practice, these approaches can downplay the multidimensional nature of ethnic coherence. To address this concern, I propose a multidimensional theory of Ukrainian ethnic coherence and validate its measure with a survey in government-controlled Ukraine (n = 1, 004). The factor analysis validated an 18-item scale com…

  • Making democracy work in a refugee camp: Social Capital and the Emergence of Empowerment

    Scott Feinstein, Cristina Poleacovschi•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 22

Since 2015, over one million refugees sought refuge in Europe and around 70,000 refugees have been hosted in refugee camps in Greece. Refugees’ empowerment is threatened in these camps as they have restricted access to resources and decision making. This research argues that social capital plays an important role in refugees’ sense of empowerment. The research uses a mixed-methods case study of a refugee camp in Greece, including 20 interviews an…

  • States and Refugee Integration: A Comparative Analysis of France, Germany, and Switzerland

Open Access•Scott Feinstein, Cristina Poleacovschi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2022

The Syrian civil war led to mass migration and Europe becoming a potential site of refuge. How have Syrians experienced refuge in Europe? Drawing on 58 interviews with Syrian refugees in Germany, France, and Switzerland, we find that refugees continue to experience exclusion in all integration domains including those found as markers and means, social connections, facilitators, and foundations of integration . While our cases demonstrate that Syr…

  • Ethnicity, Race, and Gender in Engineering Education: The Nuanced Experiences of Male and Female Latinx Engineering Undergraduates Targeted by Microaggressions

Open Access•Kalynda Smith, Cristina Poleacovschi et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2022

Compared to other groups, relatively less research has specifically addressed the retention of Latinx students in STEM disciplines. These students face many negative stereotypes about their group, especially related to their academic success, yet there is limited research regarding how microaggressions, subtle or ambiguous discriminatory behaviors, targeting Latinx students in engineering education settings impact their experience in those progra…

  • Individual responsibility towards providing water and wastewater public goods for displaced persons: How much and how long is the public willing to pay

Open Access•Kasey M Faust, Arkajyoti Roy et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Cities and Society•2021

  • Testing the world order: Strategic realism in Russian foreign affairs

    Open Access•Scott Feinstein, Scott G Feinstein et al.•ARTICLE•International Politics•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 11

Russian actions since 2007 appear increasingly to constitute a realist approach to international affairs. Russia appears to be behaving as a rising power, attempting to become a regional or global superpower. Essential to this pursuit, a state must gather information strategically. We examine one feature of strategic information gathering, called a test, a state action that asserts power but also garners information as it elicits a global respons…
