  • Digital Emotion Detection, Privacy, and the Law

    Open Access•Louwrensj Menges, Leonhard Menges et al.•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Technology•2025

Intuitively, it seems reasonable to prefer that not everyone knows about all our emotions, for example, who we are in love with, who we are angry with, and what we are ashamed of. Moreover, prominent examples in the philosophical discussion of privacy include emotions. Finally, empirical studies show that a significant number of people in the UK and US are uncomfortable with digital emotion detection. In light of this, it may be surprising to lea…

  • Temporal textures

    Open Access•Eva Weber-Guskar•ARTICLE•European Journal of Philosophy•2023

In the debate on meaning in life as part of a good human life, the role of time still needs to be worked out in greater detail. This paper argues that making the role of time in a specific sense explicit allows for the development of an account that leaves behind some of the objections with which current accounts are confronted. To show this, I will reconstruct two accounts of meaning in life and critically discuss them—the account of meaning by …

  • Reflecting (on) Replika

Open Access•Eva Weber-Guskar•CHAPTER•Social Robotics and the Good Life•2022

Weber-Guskar deals with the current discussion whether Replika and other chatbots can be friends or even romantic partners with humans. The skeptics often warn that if some sort of affective relationship does accrue, it is not a good but dangerous one. A central topic in this debate is the question of mutuality or reciprocity. Critics state that a certain mutuality is necessary for every good affective relationship and that chatbots and robots ar…

  • How to feel about emotionalized artificial intelligence? When robot pets, holograms, and chatbots become affective partners

    Open Access•Eva Weber-Guskar•ARTICLE•Ethics and Information Technology•2021

Interactions between humans and machines that include artificial intelligence are increasingly common in nearly all areas of life. Meanwhile, AI-products are increasingly endowed with emotional characteristics. That is, they are designed and trained to elicit emotions in humans, to recognize human emotions and, sometimes, to simulate emotions (EAI). The introduction of such systems in our lives is met with some criticism. There is a rather strong…
