The Changing Political Landscapes
This article explores why a decrease in the incumbent liberation party’s support in the 2024 general election influenced power turnover in Botswana but not in South Africa and Namibia. It examines the ideological influence of liberation parties and citizen dissatisfaction and argues that electoral institutions significantly influenced election outcomes. The first-past-the-post electoral system, which incentivises pre-election coalition-building a…
The price of ethnic marginalization
Vaccine hesitant sentiments are reported among some ethnic and racial minority communities. This study argues that their vaccine hesitancy stems from distrust in the government that marginalizes them. Building on existing studies on ethnicity, health, and political trust, this study offers an original contribution by using causal mediation analyses to provide suggestive evidence of a mediating relationship between ethnic marginalization and vacci…
Perception of China in Zimbabwe
This study examines the influence of media exposure and partisanship on the perceptions of China in Zimbabwe. We conducted an online survey experiment to examine how the media coverage of China on Chinese, American, and British media influence partisan attitudes. The results indicate that US/UK media exposure negatively affects attitudes toward China’s economic and political influence, whereas positive coverage by the Chinese media positively imp…
Vaccine diplomacy
COVID-19 vaccines were unevenly distributed across the world, with fewer supplies in the Global South. The geopolitical powers who developed the vaccines started engaging in vaccine diplomacy, competing to donate or export their vaccines to other countries. A perspective neglected in this landscape is of those living in countries targeted by vaccine diplomacy. This study conducted a survey experiment in Zimbabwe to examine the influence of vaccin…
Democracy on the line? Political legitimacy and support for military rule in Africa
Incumbent and opposition popular support and boycotts in authoritarian and hybrid regimes in Africa, the Middle East and beyond
Variation in election boycotts in Africa and the Middle East raise the question of the factors that influence the likelihood of boycotts. Examining this dynamic in Africa, the Middle East and around the globe, we explore one possible factor influencing national election boycotts: the relative level of popular support between the regime and opposition. Utilising the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) dataset, we find that when the regime has greater p…
A tale of two people
Expectation and disconfirmation
Research has shown that dissatisfaction with government performance negatively influences political system appraisal. Citizens' view change as they evaluate their government's economic successes and failures. Economic strains and the perception of the government's inability to improve citizens' living standards discourage citizens' commitment to the political system and trust in governance. However, citizens' dissatisfaction manifests in tandem w…
The politics of flu vaccines
While vaccine hesitancy has become a salient issue, few studies have examined the influence of international collaboration and vaccine developments on people's attitudes towards vaccines. The international collaboration especially with China has been an integral part of the field of influenza. In recent years, attitudes towards vaccines and China are both heavily politicized in the USA with a deepening partisan divide. Republicans are more likely…
Where do social media and education meet? A closer look at understanding of democracy
Social media presents a contradictory relationship with democracy. Once, it was regarded as a tool for democracy, providing alternative sources of information and coordinating social movements for democratization. Later it also became a tool for authoritarian regimes to control information and spread propaganda to stay in power. This mixed perception suggests that both democratic and authoritarian forces can use social media to influence public o…
Economic performance and good governance
Citizens' satisfaction with governance is a critical political issue in China. How do citizens evaluate the effort to improve governance quality by the Chinese government? Are citizens satisfied with the governance at the local level? Does citizens' economic well-being affect their evaluation of local governance, and if so, how? Drawing data from the Chinese Household Income Project (CHIP) 2018 survey, this study attempts to provide some insights…
A party with China
Most of the attention on Africa-China relations has centred on China's economic activities. What remains unclear is the role of partisanship in shaping public perceptions of China in African countries. Since the Chinese government builds a favourable relationship with an incumbent party, incumbent party supporters tend to have positive views towards China whereas opposition party supporters perceive China more critically. This study conducts mult…
What has nation building got to do with immigration
The perception of immigrants varies across countries. In Botswana, xenophobia is rarely violent and manifests in stereotypes the host population has about immigrants. In South Africa, anti-immigrant violence has claimed many lives. However, South Africa's nation-building process has facilitated the co-existence of people from different backgrounds and races under an inclusive national identity. In contrast, Botswana's nation-building process assi…
How people appraise their government
Recent protests against police brutality in Nigeria and the Arab Spring, which was sparked by an incident of police brutality in Tunisia, led to public demands that brought political reforms. This paper explores the question, how do citizens evaluate their government in regards to corruption? Using the Afrobarometer Wave 6 dataset, I investigate the relationship between the public's perception of police and upper-level government officials' corru…
