  • Vegetation and Lake Ecosystem Dynamics in the South-Western Part of the Ukok Plateau in the Late Holocene

Open Access•Y D Vnukovskaya, Natalia Rudaya et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2026

This article provides the first results of a comprehensive study of bottom sediments from Lake Gusinoye, located in the south-western part of the Ukok Plateau (the Altai Republic). This territory possesses high archaeological significance due to its unique monuments of the Pazyryk culture of the early Scythian period. The preservation of the monuments (including organic materials) is directly related to the natural conditions in the high mountain…

  • First Application of Sedimentary Plant DNA Analysis in Reconstruction of the Holocene Vegetation in the Altai

    Open Access•S E Karachurina, Y D Vnukovskaya et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

This study presents a detailed comparison of plant community composition using both spore-pollen analysis and sedimentary DNA (sedaDNA) metabarcoding. The Holocene-age sediments from Lake Balyktukel (Ulagan Plateau, Altai Republic) were analyzed. The comparison revealed significant differences in the composition and proportion of dominant taxa, highlighting the distinct spatial coverage and sensitivity of each method. The sedaDNA analysis identif…
