The Influence of Psychotropic Flora and Fauna on Maya Religion [and Comments and Reply]
An examination of Maya art from southern Mesoamerica shows the following art motifs appearing with some regularity throughout the archaeological record, from Pre-Classic to Post-Conquest times: (a) mushroom stones and mushroom pottery, (b) the frog/toad motif, and (c) the water lily motif. The thesis of this papers is that these flora and fauna represented in art are related to and influenced by the psychotropic properties of the mushroom, toad, …

The Jog and the Jaguar Signs in Maya Writing
Graphemes T-757 and T-788 (Thompson 1962) are identified as a single sign representing a rodent. Intermediate forms are cited, the use of the sign in glyph T-1.60:757 is discussed, and its substitution for T-501 is noted. It is suggested that before Thompson's catalog can be successfully used for statistical comparisons it needs to be converted to a catalog of signs by investigations of the use of the individual graphemes in context

Historical Implications of a Pattern of Dates at Piedras Negras, Guatemala
Inscriptions at Piedras Negras are shown to form a pattern of discrete sets of records, each inscribed on a group of consecutive monuments beginning with a stela depicting the 'ascension motif.'
