Governance-by-signifier and the far-right politics of “woke” in the European Parliament
Far-right actors in the European Parliament increasingly use “woke” as a catch-all term for very different political conflicts. Debates over gender, migration and climate are often folded into a single story about ideological excess and unwanted interference from Brussels. This article develops the concept of governance-by-signifier to explain how that process works. It identifies three mechanisms: condensation, through which distinct issues are …
ICE as domestic state terror
This article examines how Operation Metro Surge generated domestic state terror in Minneapolis, Minnesota, during Donald Trump’s second presidency. Drawing on qualitative thematic analysis of contemporaneous news reporting, NGO, civil and legal documentation produced between December 2025 and March 2026, the study analyses how immigration enforcement practices operated beyond their formal administrative remit. The findings show that terror was pr…
Modular messaging and multimodal influence amidst democratic fragility in Greece
This article examines how New Democracy’s party-funded media ecosystem in Greece organises multimodal campaigning through a division of rhetorical labour between static cartoons and online video. Focusing on the network linking the Truth Team and the news-style outlet Ellada24, it analyses 150 Ellada24 cartoons and 50 Truth Team YouTube videos collected between January 2021 and July 2025. Social semiotic analysis and thematic coding, integrated v…
Misuse, mislabelling, and the broken path of the ‘hard-right’
While ‘hard-right’ has gained traction in scholarship and newsrooms, its conceptual vagueness and practical effects have remained underexamined. Drawing on Framing Theory and Agenda-Setting Theory, this article offers the first systematic, crosspublication study of how seven leading English-language outlets – The Guardian , the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Politico, The New Statesman, The Economist , Reuters, and The Financial Times – …

What happens when a billionaire buys the world’s digital public square and starts laundering conspiracy theories? This article examines Elon Musk’s use of memes and AI-generated images on X (formerly Twitter) following his October 2022 acquisition of the platform. It investigates how image-based posts during the 2023–24 US election cycle engaged with conspiratorial narratives and positioned them within the platform’s attention economy. Drawing on…
Weaponising Religion in Greece Post Economic Crisis
This article analyses and compares how three far-right Greek parties – Greek Solution, Victory, and Voice of Reason – draw on religious narratives to advance exclusionary politics between 2019 and 2024. Applying Critical Discourse Analysis ( CDA ) to parliamentary debates, social media posts, public statements, and manifestos, the study illustrates how each party moulds Greek Orthodox Christianity into a strategic resource for shaping collective …
Decoding the symbolic storm fuelling Greek far-right politics
This visual essay interrogates how Greek far-right groups—Golden Dawn, Greek Solution, Victory, and Voice of Reason—deploy and distort visual imagery and accompanying discourse to propagate highly nationalist, Islamophobic, misogynistic, anti-LGBTQ+, and religiously conservative narratives. Employing a qualitative case study method that integrates visual content and discourse analysis, the study examines symbols, composition, and iconography alon…
From protest to paradox
IntroductionSince the onset of the eurozone crisis in 2010, Greece has experienced profound economic and social upheaval. Public debt soared above 146 per cent of GDP, while GDP contracted by roughly 23 per cent between 2008 and 2013. Unemployment peaked at 27.5 per cent in 2013, and youth joblessness reached nearly 60 per cent in some regions (Lapavitsas, 2019; Eurostat, 2020). The Troika—comprising the European Central Bank (ECB), European Comm…
Battleground Europe
In 2003, within Black communities, the term "woke" served as a vital reminder to remain alert to the systemic police brutality targeting Black people in the United States (Allen, 2023). It symbolised the commitment of those dedicated to social justice and remaining vigilant. During the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement in 2020-sparked by the murder of George Floyd, a Black American man who was fatally asphyxiated in Minneapolis …
Hide and seek
This study critically examines how the Greek extreme-right harnesses persuasive communication and tactical campaigning under severe constraints, focusing on Ilias Kasidiaris–a former Golden Dawn MP sentenced to 13 years in 2020 for leading a criminal organization. While incarcerated, Kasidiaris founded Hellenes, positioning it as Golden Dawn’s ideological successor even as legal rulings barred its electoral participation. Adopting a communication…

By blending enduring nationalist narratives with the unique affordances of digital platforms, Golden Dawn’s content demonstrates the resilience and adaptability of extreme‐right movements within contemporary media ecologies. Employing Digital …
Old Prejudices, New Flags
This essay traces the shifts in far-right Greek political rhetoric on Jews, Israel, and Palestine over the last fifteen years. Using the ongoing genocide in Gaza as an analytical lens for understanding the rising extremism of Greece’s governing Right, it shows how older conspiracist and ultranationalist grammars have been redirected from Jews to racialized Muslims, with Palestine positioned as the preeminent security threat and Israel recast as a…
Demokratia dismantled
Derailing Truth

This study examines the Greek government's crisis response through an integrated analysis of official discourse, revealing that the response unfolds in three distinct phases.
