  • Paleoecological context of Homo aff. erectus (ATE7-1) at Sima del Elefante (late Early Pleistocene, Atapuerca, Spain) inferred from the herpetofaunal assemblage

Open Access•Christian Sánchez-Bandera, Ana Fagoaga et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2025

The Sima del Elefante cave is one of the archaeopaleontological sites located in the karstic complex of Sierra de Atapuerca (Burgos, Spain), which is a remarkable locality for documenting an extensive sequence of human evidence. Within the stratigraphic sequence of the Sima del Elefante site, Level TE7 has yielded one of the oldest human remains recovered to date in western Europe. A hominin mid-face has recently been discovered (specimen ATE7-1)…

  • The Early Neolithic Settlement of Movila lui Deciov in Romanian Banat

Raiko Krauß, Dan Ciobotaru et al.•ARTICLE•Praehistorische Zeitschrift•2025

Since 2018, excavation work at the well-known site of Movila lui Deciov has been resumed by an international excavation team from the University of Tübingen together with the National Museum of Banat in Timişoara. The site was discovered at the beginning of the 20 th century by Kisléghi Nagy Gyula, who also carried out the first excavations. Further excavations were undertaken between 2001 and 2004 by Banat Museum in Timișoara and a team from the…

  • Early Pleistocene freshwater fish from Dursunlu (Ilgın Basin, south-western Türkiye)

    Open Access•Angel Blanco-Lapaz, Àngel H Luján et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Environments and Humans•2024

Dursunlu, located in the Ilgın Basin (south-western Türkiye), represents one of the most prolific sites to explore early human occupations in Anatolia. This paper describes the lacustrine fish assemblage from this site during the Early Pleistocene (Günz glaciation). The fish community comprised two families, namely Cyprinidae and Cobitidae. Within the cyprinids, the genera had a wide range of ecological diversity. The most frequently observed gen…

  • Coastal and Inland subsistence strategies during the Gravettian in the Cantabrian Region (northern Iberian Peninsula)

    Open Access•Angel Blanco-Lapaz, A B Marín‐arroyo et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Advances•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 28

The Gravettian site of Fuente del Salín Cave is located in the northern Iberian Peninsula (Cantabrian Region, Spain). In 2016, excavations conducted at the site yielded numerous faunal remains, including mammals and fish. Researchers also recovered molluscs remains during the 1990, 1991, and 2000 campaigns. This study presents the results of the archaeozoological and taphonomical analyses of the large mammals and fish remains recovered during the…

  • Late Pleistocene environments in the southern Zagros of Iran and their implications for human evolution

    Open Access•Angel Blanco-Lapaz, Mario Mata-González et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2022•Cited by: 8•References: 83

The Zagros Mountains represent a strategic geographic region near the junction of Africa, Europe, and Asia, and valleys within the mountain range likely correspond to migration corridors used by archaic and modern humans. Ghar-e Boof, a key archeological site in the southern Zagros, is located at an altitude of 905 m.a.s.l. in the Dasht-e Rostam region of the Fars Province, Iran. On the basis of lithic artifacts and radiocarbon and luminescence d…

  • Paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental reconstructions based on the small vertebrates from the Middle Paleolithic of Hohle Fels Cave, SW Germany

    Open Access•Elisa Luzi, Angel Blanco-Lapaz et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 63

In this paper, we analyse the fish and small mammal assemblages from the Middle Paleolithic horizons of Hohle Fels Cave to reconstruct the paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental conditions faced by the Neanderthal groups who occupied the site. The fish assemblage indicates that the freshwater ecosystem around this site was characterized by a pre-mountain river system with the presence of permanent, oxygen-rich, and cold running waters. The results …

  • Minimal Tools, Maximum Meat

Britt M Starkovich, Patrick Cuthbertson et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnoarchaeology•2020

This article presents a pilot experiment conducted to better understand how Middle Pleistocene hominins might have processed and exploited elephants using simple stone and bone tools. The experiment was conducted in three phases: (1) production of small, flake-based stone tools, (2) butchery of the lower hind-leg of an Indian elephant, and (3) manufacture of bone tools from the tibia. The experiment shows it is possible to cut through elephant sk…
