  • True rate of destruction

  • Transformed by Fire

    Open Access•Adam Budziszewski, Alfonso Gastelum-Strozzi et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2025•References: 69

This article explores the cremation burial practices of a pre-Tarascan community at Los Tamarindos, focusing on the perceptions of the bodies of those cremated. To reconstruct this element of mortuary practices in the Middle Balsas River basin during the Postclassic period, we analyzed the thermal alterations, anatomical arrangements, and spatial distribution of cremains within funerary urns. Our findings shed light on the low efficiency of crema…

  • A preliminary bioarchaeological study of the funerary urns from Los Tamarindos, Tierra Caliente, in Michoacan, Mexico

    Open Access•Adam Budziszewski•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 82

This article presents the results of a preliminary bioarchaeological study of 10 funerary urns containing human burned remains from the Los Tamarindos urn-field cemetery dated to the Postclassic period. I was able to determine the basic biological profile data. In addition, I determined the fragmentation rate as well as the thermal alternation of bones from funerary urns from Los Tamarindos, which allowed me to propose the first observations abou…

  • A bifid mandibular condyle from a cremation grave from Paprotki Kolonia cemetery, Poland

    Open Access•Adam Budziszewski, Maciej Karczewski•ARTICLE•Anthropological Review•2024•References: 31

This study investigates the etiology of a bifid mandibular condyle found in a Bogaczewo culture cremation burial from the Paprotki Kolonia site 1. Using macroscopic analysis and CT imaging, we identified a sagittal separation of the mandibular condyle, suggesting a developmental origin. This represents the first known case of a bifid mandibular condyle from an Iron Age cremation context. Analytical potential is limited due to the preservation of …

  • Does shape matter? A comparative study of the usage of calibrated sieves in the study of burned human bone from archeological and forensic contexts

    Open Access•Adam Budziszewski•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 21

In recent years, the use of a set of sieves became a crucial part of the methodology in studies of burned human bone from archeological and forensic contexts. A set of three sieves (10 mm, 5 mm, 2 mm) is widely used in studies of burned human remains, particularly those from the British Isles, in order to determine bone fragmentation, following methodology proposed by Jacqueline McKinley (1993). Usually, mesh opening sizes are reported in methods…
