Community-Led Responses to Mpox Among Gay, Bisexual, and Queer Men in Canada
Since 2022, a global mpox outbreak in non-endemic countries, including Canada, has spread rapidly, mainly affecting gay, bisexual, and queer men (GBQM). With mpox primarily transmitted through sexual and close physical contact, concerns emerged over the replication of early responses to HIV/AIDS, which was initially labeled as a “gay disease,” perpetuating ongoing negative stereotypes and discrimination against GBQM. To prevent potential social a…

Using scenario videos with Theatre Testing method to adapt a peer navigation model to improve street-connected youth's access to HIV care in Kenya and Canada
Theatre testing (TT) method demonstrates whole or portions of an evidence-based intervention to stakeholders to elicit feedback on context-specific adaptations and future implementation. The Peer Navigator Project (PNP) studied the adaptation and implementation of Peer Navigators in five urban sites to increase street-connected youth (SCY) access to HIV prevention, testing, and treatment in Canada and Kenya. TT was used with SCY, healthcare provi…
Barriers to and facilitators of accessing HIV services for street-involved youth in Canada and Kenya
Intersectional stigma was a critical barrier in all sites, and policies and programs that foster welcoming environments for youth from diverse backgrounds and living circumstances may be better able to respond to the HIV service needs of this high risk population. Social support and navigation services were reported to facilitate access to HIV services in all sites
Knowledge and Policy About LGBTQI Migrants
Learning From Practitioners Serving LGBTQ+ Forced Migrants and Other Diverse Groups

Transformative Disruptions and Collective Knowledge Building
Starting from the idea that many social work professors exceed the traditionally defined ‘service’ requirements of their university and are actively involved in social change and justice initiatives, this article aims at critically reflecting upon our own experiences as three social work educators. In the article, we address the question of how social engagement may influence the development of our social work ethical consciousness. If a growing …
Responses to Structural Violence
This article examines how the Canadian immigration regime socially organizes the everyday lives of queer and trans migrants with precarious status. Drawing from key findings from an institutional ethnographic study, this article maps out the disjuncture between the actual experiences of queer and trans migrants with precarious status and the ideological and textual production of precarious status by the Canadian state. Making explicit this disjun…
Digging beneath the surface
Background : The literature on trans youth has been dominated by etiological studies interested in trans experience as a medical phenomenon. An emerging body of literature has begun to document that trans youth are a diverse, vulnerable, yet resilient population, and to investigate the role of various sites of support such as the family, peer groups, institutions, and community spaces in contributing to or impeding trans youth's well-being. Metho…
Tracing the Coloniality of Queer and Trans Migrations
Most of the scholarship on queer and trans migrants focuses on the refugee experience post-migration to Canada. In contrast, this article draws from a doctoral study that included participant interviews and policy/media textual analysis to map out the historical, geopolitical, social, and economic dimensions that shape homophobic and transphobic violence across the globe, as well as queer and trans migrations from the Global South to Canada. Thes…
