Serbian Early Printed Books from Venice
The paper analyses the most significant orthographic variations in early printed Serbian books from Božidar Vuković's printing shop in Venice. The research was conducted based on automatically obtained transcripts using a previously trained model for automatic text recognition in the Transkribus software platform. Orthographic variations were examined at the macro level using the stylo package in the statistical programming language R, and at the…
The Digital Revolution in Slavic Manuscript Studies
The paper highlights the recent advances of computer-assisted manuscript transcription using Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) programs such as Transkribus. Numerous examples showing the capabilities of current HTR models with respect to different Slavic scripts and handwriting styles are presented and ways to use automatically transcribed sources for multiple purposes are discussed. We demonstrate that the transcription quality is stable throug…
Linguistic Analysis of Church Slavonic Documents
The study is concerned with Church Slavonic manuscripts and early printed books at the threshold of modernity. It has the methodological aim of applying and evaluating a quantitative and qualitative mixed-methods approach for analyzing pre-modern Slavic textual culture. With respect to the quantitative part of the study, the authors make use of the Handwritten Text Recognition tool Transkribus in order to transcribe manuscripts and early printed …
Ukrainian standard variants in the 20th century
In this study, we use the General Regionally Annotated Corpus of Ukrainian (GRAC, www.uacorpus.org ) as an experimental field for testing stylometric approaches for variationist analysis. While, in the last years, quantitative methods such as binomial mixed-effects regression models as well as machine-learning methods such as random forests have gained considerable popularity in corpus linguistics, methods from stylometry have not been used for v…
East Slavic indefinite pronouns
The paper focuses on the development and functional distribution of indefinite pronouns in Old East Slavic, taking into account different sources, genres and registers. All the examples in the collected dataset were taken from the historical modules of the Russian National Corpus. They were tagged for type of indefinite marker , source (including originality and date ), type of reference of the indefinite marker, semantics , type of discourse , a…
Digitising (Romanian) Cyrillic using Transkribus
In this paper we discuss the application of the software platform Transkribus (transkribus.eu), an AI-assisted tool for Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR), to 16th century Romanian manuscript and printed sources using Cyrillic scripts. After an overview of the basic functionality of the HTR technology and Transkribus, we discuss the Romanian and bilingual Slavonic-Romanian sources we used, give an insight on training specific and generic as well …
Congruence in Contact-Induced Language Change
Modern contact linguistics has primarily focused on contact between languages that are genetically unrelated and structurally distant. This compendium of articles looks instead at the effects of pre–existing structural congruency between the affected languages at the time of their initial contact, using the Romance and Slavic languages as examples. In contact of this kind, both genetic and typological similarities play a part.
