  • Gear Culture Methods

    Open Access•Eliot Bates•ARTICLE•Science & Technology Studies•2026

Gear cultures are a novel kind of social formation around specific kinds of fetishised objects (e.g., recording studio equipment, digital cameras, guitar pedals, espresso machines, synthesisers, overclocked computers, mechanical keyboards). Gear typically represents technologies that nominally were made obsolete by software simulations or mass market commodities but that gained new meanings, uses and practices through transnational networks of on…

  • Livestreaming a doitocracy

    Open Access•Eliot Bates•ARTICLE•Convergence The International…•2026

Earth Modular Society (EMS) is a cross-platform community dedicated to live hardware modular synthesis, with their primary efforts going into a 24/7 modular “radio station” that livestreams on Twitch and YouTube, and a supporting Discord chat server. • Assembling Hyperpop

    Open Access•Eliot Bates, Sophie Delphi et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Sociology•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 26

In this article, we analyze how a music genre is reciprocally defined online, through the crowdsourced 'facts' of Wikipedia. What are the traditional implicit and explicit exclusionary practices in this sort of genre formation? And how can internet-specific sociabilities create new exclusionary practices in the process of defining music? By analyzing the edit history of Wikipedia's 'hyperpop' page, we locate ongoing debates, controversies, and co…

  • Look at all those big knobs! Online audio technology discourse and sexy gear fetishes

    Open Access•Eliot Bates, Simon Bennett•ARTICLE•Convergence The International…•2022

Despite a predominantly digital, 21st century music production landscape, analogue hardware professional audio technologies persist. In the discoursal throes of the leading online audio technology message forum Gearslutz, such technologies are routinely objectified, sexualized, fetishized and socialized into gear. Situated in a contemporary critical, interdisciplinary framework of fetish, masculinity and sexuality studies, this research interroga…

  • Resource ecologies, political economies and the ethics of audio technologies in the Anthropocene

    Open Access•Eliot Bates•ARTICLE•Popular Music•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 57

Understanding how recorded and amplified stage musics contribute towards producing the Anthropocene necessitates attending to complex transnational flows of material, capital and labor, and how they coalesce into technological objects. This is complicated by the wide array of sites, practices and knowledges involved during various stages of the production process, from initial resource extraction, to smelting, component manufacturing, technology …

  • Vinyl as event

    Eliot Bates•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Economy•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 34

Why would anyone purchase expensive, natural resource-intensive, and seemingly obsolete material carriers of music when streaming providers provide unlimited access to over 40 million songs for a small monthly fee? As I will show, we can no longer assume that contemporary interest is driven solely by a collector’s market or because of the audible qualities of the vinyl listening experience, and must attend to the many ways people engage with reco…
