Measurement of interagency collaboration in behavioral health for children, youth and families
Practice Facilitation to Address Unhealthy Alcohol Use in Primary Care
ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04248023
Project Better
Birthing people with opioid use disorder (OUD) face unique stressors during the transition from pregnancy to postpartum that can negatively impact the maternal-infant dyad. This study aimed to describe the development of a family-centered, technology-delivered intervention tailored to help pregnant people receiving medication for OUD (MOUD) prepare for this transition. Formative data from patients and providers identified intervention content: (1…
Increasing Prenatal Care Compliance in At-Risk Black Women
A longitudinal mediational investigation of risk pathways among cannabis use, interpersonal trauma exposure, and trauma-related distress
Both the self-medication and high-risk hypotheses were supported. Findings support a bidirectional causal relationship between cannabis use and trauma-related phenotypes. Additionally, results highlight areas for colleges to intervene among students to help reduce cannabis use and create a safer environment. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
Sex Specific Sleep Parameters Among People With Substance Use Disorder
Sleep holds promise as an avenue to address SUD within a biopsychosocial model. Future work at the intersection of SUD and sleep should prioritize investigations of their interplay with sex to identify targets for tailored SUD interventions
Coffee and energy drink use patterns in college freshmen
The response pattern was ubiquitous, with ED + Co most likely, Co intermediate, and NoCE least likely to endorse a broad range of substance use, problem alcohol behaviors, and familial risk factors. The finding that the Co group differed from both the ED + Co and NoCE groups on 8 measures and from the NoCE group on one additional measure underscores the importance of looking at coffee in addition to EDs when considering associations between caffe…
The Impact of Parental Incarceration on Psychopathy, Crime, and Prison Violence in Women
There is a growing interest in understanding the consequences of parental incarceration. Unfortunately, research exploring the long-term criminological and personality effects in female offspring is limited, particularly among second-generation female offenders. In a sample of 170 female offenders, we first assessed the correlations between psychopathy facets, prison violence, and types of crime. Next, we tested the association between childhood …
Sex Differences in Alcohol-Related Problems Among a Sample of HIV-Positive Nigerians
Although alcohol use is common among persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), and heavy drinking is more common worldwide in males than females, studies of sex differences in risk for development of symptoms of alcohol dependence have yielded mixed results. In Nigeria, there is a paucity of data on sex differences in alcohol-related problems among PLWHA. This has hindered our ability to tailor treatment to best meet the needs of PLWHA. To address th…

Reducing Sexual Risk Behaviors for HIV/STDs in Women With Alcohol Use Disorders
Objective: A pilot randomized clinical trial (RCT) examined effectiveness of HIV/STD Safer Sex Skills Building + Alcohol (SSB+A) intervention for women with Alcohol Use Disorders (AUDs) in a residential treatment setting. Method: After randomizing thirty-six women with AUDs and reporting having intercourse with a male partner in the past 180 days to SSB+A or HE (standard HIV/STD education) groups, rates of penetrative intercourse with and without…
Adapting an HIV/STDs Prevention Curriculum to Fit the Needs of Women With Alcohol Problems
Alcohol and drug dependent women are at increased risk for HIV/STDs. This paper discusses how a prevention curriculum, "Safer Sex Skill Building" (SSB), designed to reduce the contraction of HIV/STDs among drug-abusing women, could be modified to fit the needs of alcohol-abusing women in a residential treatment program. Authors modified the SSB by incorporating feedback from expert consultants as well as by engaging study participants in revising…
Addressing perinatal disparities using community‐based participatory research
Striking racial disparities in infant mortality exist in the United States, with rates of infant death among African Americans nearly twice the national average. Community‐based participatory research approaches have been successful in fostering collaborative relationships between communities and researchers that are focused on developing effective and sustainable interventions and programs that target the needs of the community. The current arti…
The NIH R03 Award
Social workers in academic and agency settings have the opportunity to do funded research using the National Institutes of Health (NIH) R03 small grant mechanism designed for discrete, clearly defined projects that can be completed within a 1- to 2-year time period with limited funding. This article describes the R03 mechanism and provides a guide for the developmental steps in writing a successful grant application. It identifies the recent NIH …
Weekly patterns of drug treatment attendance
OBJECTIVES: This study examined weekly patterns of drug treatment attendance in relation to date of welfare payment receipt and reason for treatment absence. METHODS: Treatment attendance by Medicaid-eligible pregnant women who were drug dependent was examined by calendar week over a 29-month period. RESULTS: Time series analyses showed that attendance was lower during week 1 than week 4. Drug use was the most frequently reported reason for treat…
Psychosexual functioning in opioid‐dependent women
Psychosexual functioning of opioid‐dependent women (N = 63) was compared to a socioeconomically similar group of non‐drug‐abusing women (N = 53) using the Derogatis Sexual Functioning Inventory (DSFI). Initial analyses revealed differences in sexual drive, liberal attitude, and both masculine and feminine gender‐role affiliation. When demographic differences between the two groups were statistically controlled, however, only liberal attitude and …
