Discourses on risk and community in three digital food networks in Sweden
This study employs critical discourse analysis to investigate three Swedish digital food networks–Matvärn (Food Defense), Potatisuppropet (The Potato Petition), and REKO Ring–and their website and social media texts. Two prominent types of discourse emerge from the material: risk discourses and community discourses. Matvärn and Potatisuppropet used an alarmist rhetoric, highlighting crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the loss of a culture w…
Fantasmatic narratives of past and present Swedish back-to-the-land movements
Cultivating thirdspace
Over the past 15 years, there has been an increased interest in urban gardening. Queues for getting a gardening spot have grown, as many urban citizens seek a spot to cultivate vegetables, and studies have stressed how urban gardens can be one ingredient in creating more sustainable cities. Following the work of urban theorists Henry Lefebvre and Edward Soja, this study explores urban gardens as thirdspaces. Interviewing allotment gardeners and c…
Urban gardening as a risk-reduction strategy – an intersectional analysis of top-down gardening initiatives
In cities around the world, urban gardening is increasingly used as a municipal strategy to tackle both environmental and social risks. In this study we draw on critical and intersectional studies of risk to analyse municipalities’ framing of urban gardening as a way to illuminate how it is entangled with contemporary structures of power. The material consists of strategy documents and information on the municipalities’ websites, and the texts we…
The Enchanted North
The article explores 'off the grid' representations in social media, with a focus on how these representations reproduce imaginaries of nature, place and gender. The analysis material consists of content produced by three influencers who left urban life for a simpler lifestyle in northern Sweden. We find that the social media content draws on numerous ideals: neoliberal ideals on digital entrepreneurship, anti-capitalist ideals on 'escaping' mode…
Doing distance
This article explores expectant parents’ experiences of risk and distance following a maternity ward closure in Sweden’s northern inland. Interviews were conducted in 2017–2018 and the data were subjected to narrative analysis. Theoretically, the research adopts a feminist approach to space and risk, viewing both as simultaneously material and fluid, intersecting with categories such as gender, class, and centre-periphery. The longer distance to …
(De)politicising pregnancy-related risk
Following a restructuring of Swedish healthcare in the 1990s – moving from a welfare model to one inspired by New Public Management – maternity care in Sweden is increasingly centralised to bigger towns. This has led to several units being relocated or forced to close, and to a bigger distance to maternity care for women living in smaller towns and rural areas. In the present article, I analyse the media reporting on the recent closure of the mat…
