Introduction: Vital waste, or the body extended
This special issue, Vital Waste , tackles the trajectories and perceptions of substances originating from human and animal bodies that were excreted, expelled, cut, removed, and/or used, in a period and contexts ranging from Medieval Iran to contemporary South India. We approach the substances in question through the lenses of history of science and technology in addition to anthropology, re-examining the conceptual frameworks of "afterlives," an…
Profession of Revulsion: Subjective Science and the Mobilization of Emotions in Late Nineteenth-Century Russian Public Medicine
This essay explores the rhetoric used by Russian zemstvo physicians, scholars of medicine, and sanitary inspectors to share their expertise with regard to health problems in the last three decades of the nineteenth century. Studies of more-than-human sociality in general, and multispecies ethnography in particular, are becoming an increasingly popular trend in global (social, human, and transdisciplinary) scholarship. In the current forum, researchers from various disciplines discuss the advantages, limitations, and challenges of this trend. They also share their thoughts on why multispecies research has (or has not) an appeal in Russian academia and what the future…
Birth of the Russian Patient: Somatic Modes of Attention and the Embodied Self in a Mid-Eighteenth-Century Russian Diary
Research into the history of doctor–patient relations or into the sick person’s perspective on treatment and prophylaxis never ceases to enrich or even undermine existing theoretical approaches to the experience of illness. Ego-documents created by ‘sick-men’ in early modern Europe demonstrate complex patient behaviour that resembled neither the active ‘patient–consumer’ of the post-war period nor the ideal type of the passive ‘patient–sufferer’ …

Taste of Trust: Documenting Solidarity in Soviet Private Cookbooks, 1950–1980s
Taste of Trust: Documenting Solidarity in Soviet Private Cookbooks, 1950-1980s This paper investigates the problem of trust and solidarity as they were mirrored in private manuscripts on cooking and housekeeping, and traces the circulation of culinary information within specific social networks. Soviet handwritten cookbooks, though rooted in the nineteenth-century tradition, constituted a phenomenon in and of themselves. They maintained and trans…
