The newly discovered Tangut xylograph Essential Selection of Mixed Homonyms Often-Transmitted is a primer designed to teach beginners over 2000 Tangut characters commonly used in Buddhist scriptures. • Tangut Pillars of Uṣṇīṣavijayā in Baoding Prefecture

Open Access•Hongyin Nie, Nie Hongyin•ARTICLE•Written Monuments of the Orient•2023

In the Park of Lotus Pond in the Baoding city of China, there is a pair of stone pillars of Uṣṇīṣavijayā erected in 1502, which proves to have been the latest Tangut relics existing so far. A textual investigation of their inscriptions indicates that they were built in memory of two monks of the Xingshan Temple, which was first established in the southeastern corner of the city in the 13th c. and repeatedly rebuilt later. After a reconstruction a…

The previously undesiphered manuscript inv. No 5875 preserved in the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, Russian Academy of Sciences, proves to be the Tangut version of a primary reader. Its Chinese original is an inconsistently miscellaneous compilation of ancient literary allusions and contemporary folk maxims. The text is composed by different literary style of antithetical couplet and ordinary prose without a consistent subject. Although its C…

  • Graph omission and abbreviation in Tangut script

    Open Access•Nie Hongyin•ARTICLE•Journal of Chinese Writing Systems•2018

In a few Tangut manuscripts there are eight omitted graphs used for explaining the character structures and three abbreviations used for transcribing the Tibetan word badzra or Sanskrit word vajra. The latter were formed by merging two or three parts of standard graphs so as to record polysyllables or consonant clusters in other languages. The usage of this method to create new characters, though originating from an ancient tradition and being oc…

Open Access•Hongyin Nie, Nie Hongyin•ARTICLE•Journal of Chinese Writing Systems•2018

In the Qing compilation Luoluo Yiyu there are preserved precious materials of the Loloish language and script of mid-18th century Liangshan. The version in Ōtani University has proved to be the definitive edition for Imperial reading, but as the last copyist was not literate in Loloish, his writing forms and glyph arrangements were influenced by Chinese instead of Lolos. Some entries in the Luoluo Yiyu can be successfully deciphered according to …
