    Camilo Leon-Quijano•ARTICLE•Métropolitiques•2026

  • Pour une anthropologie de la thermoception

    Open Access•Camilo Leon-Quijano•ARTICLE•L Homme•2026

    Open Access•Camilo Leon-Quijano•ARTICLE•Focales•2024

  • Why Do "Good" Pictures Matter in Anthropology

    Open Access•Camilo Leon-Quijano•ARTICLE•Cultural Anthropology•2022•Cited by: 8•References: 19

This article explores the relationship between photography and anthropology in the age of digital ethnographies and anthropologies of the future. It focuses on the phenomenological bond between the picture-taking process and the politics of visual representations by looking at an object that has shaped the discipline since its very origins. Based on a series of visual encounters in a French banlieue, I describe to what extent good pictures are re…

  • The performative photograph: A poietic approach to visual ethnography in a French banlieue

    Open Access•Camilo Leon-Quijano•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2021

By reexamining the empirical relationship between ethnography and photography, this article explores the phenomenology of photographic experiences in a French banlieue. Photography may be a powerful practice to critically depict social phenomena in the field. Taking into account the basic assumption that photography is more than visual evidence of observed realities, I analyze the creative and nonindexical dimensions of visual experiences. Based …

  • Gender, Photography and Visual Participatory Methods: An Ethnographic Research Project between Colombia and France

    Camilo Leon-Quijano•ARTICLE•Visual Anthropology•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 38

This article explores the construction of gender in urban settings, through visual participatory methods. It is argued that gendered experience may be studied, described and visualized through engaged visual practices using photography as a research tool. I suggest that visual participatory methods provide a new support to explore the multidimensionality of the urban experience in which gender acts. By focusing on visual experience and in the pro…
