The study is important for two reasons. First, it offers socio-cultural theory to the study of social media and provides researchers with a theory-based method of using Instagram as a data source to detect …
Field notes from the margins: Rethinking ethnographic presence through interpretive transcription and online interviewing
This article draws on a multi-sited study involving 307 interviews with labeled youth across Europe to argue that methodological improvisations can deepen, rather than dilute, ethnographic practice. Confronted with limited access, what began as a practical decision (to forgo audio recording and go online) quickly evolved into a methodological provocation. Rather than treating these adaptations as compromises, we demonstrate how they enhanced trus…

The current paper frames that need as an act of curiosity and an ethical responsibility. With that framing in hand, the paper explains the process of overcoming difficul…

The aim of this paper is to suggest a useful model demonstrating the focal role of the primary investigator in creating an inclusive and participatory setting to produce knowledge challenging epistemic injustices. By cooperating with novice…
Studying values about childhood using networked photography on Instagram
This study examines adults' postings of photos of children on social media and offers a unique methodological approach to studying visual data. A major innovation of this study is first, to enact the concept and method of narrative inquiry to the digital photographs. Having applied this method, the study also offers findings about the diverse values that emerge across two specific digital parenting cultures organized via Instagram hashtags of #fa…

The widespread practice of parents’ photograph taking and posting of their children inspired this study. The study asks: How do mothers and children use photographs of children to make sense of childhood? The research included an activity, where children (ages 7-10) and their mothers narrated stories usin…

This study explores protesters’ accounts of their experiences. We examine these experiences using two lines of inquiry – how did the participants of the Gezi Park protests use linguistic cues when writing at the park and how did those writings differ from personal reflections posted on …
