Late Neolithic barley cultivation practices at pile-dwelling sites in Slovenia
Today, the area of Ljubljansko barje is used as farmland, but in the past it was covered by peat, and before that by a lake. During that time, the area was settled by pile-dwelling communities (ca. 4700–2700 bce ). Archaeobotanical crop finds and crop processing by-products point to a well-established farming society. While the pile-dwelling settlements in Ljubljansko barje are well known and have been extensively researched, the agricultural pra…
The Dataset for Tracing Invisible Hearths and Daily Routines through Carbonized Plant Remains and Geochemical Signals in an Early Iron Age Smithy at Pungrt Hillfort, Slovenia
The dataset presented in this paper comprises results from archaeobotanical and geoarchaeological analyses. It was compiled primarily to reconstruct the location of the archaeologically invisible forge hearth within a late 6th- and early 5th-century BC smithy in Building 24 at Pungrt Hillfort, central Slovenia. The analysed sediment samples were systematically collected in a 50×50 cm grid during the excavation of the building. Archaeobotanical re…
Macro to Micro Stratigraphic and Artefactual Evidence From an Early Iron Age Smithy at the Pungrt Hillfort (Central Slovenia)
The dataset presented in this paper includes data about macro- and micro-stratigraphy, as well as macro- and micro-artefacts from the Early Iron Age smithy (Building 24, phase IIb2) at the Pungrt Hillfort, Central Slovenia. The data were collected during the archaeological excavation and geoarchaeological sampling at the site, followed by laboratory processing and analysis of the gathered samples. All the data are stored at the Repository of the …
From macro to micro approaches in settlement archaeology
In this paper, we present an interdisciplinary and multiscalar study of an Early Iron Age smithy uncovered at the Pungrt hillfort in Central Slovenia. By examining and comparing the stratigraphic and artefactual evidence preserved at both macro- and micro-scales this study highlights the importance of integrated micromorphological and micro-refuse analyses in settlement contexts. Our integrated approach allowed us to identify the blacksmith’s wor…
Archaeobotanical analysis of the judgement samples from research of Stare gmajne, an Eneolithic pile-dwelling site
The archaeobotanical research of the Stare Gmajne pile-dwelling site included analyses of samples taken from moss remains and vessel contents, as well as wood anatomical analyses of several wooden artefacts and charcoal pieces. The moss of two forest species and other macroremains provide evidences of human diet and gathering as well as surrounding vegetation in the Eneolithic (3521−3366 cal BC). The results show the inhabitants collected wild pla…
Dolsko – Spodnje Škovce and a new insight into the settlement, chronology, ceramic style(s), and subsistence strategies of the Late Neolithic Sava group in Slovenia
Radiocarbon dates, analysis of ceramic finds, animal bones, fruits/seeds and wood (charcoal) from settlement features of the Sava group of the Lengyel Culture at the site of Dolsko – Spodnje Škovce in central Slovenia are presented and discussed in this paper. The aim of the study was to place the excavated material culture in its regional and supra-regional context in order to improve the understanding of Late Neolithic settlement features, chro…
The use of Cornus sanguinea L. (dogwood) fruits in the Late Neolithic
New AMS 14C dates track the arrival and spread of broomcorn millet cultivation and agricultural change in prehistoric Europe
Broomcorn millet ( Panicum miliaceum L.) is not one of the founder crops domesticated in Southwest Asia in the early Holocene, but was domesticated in northeast China by 6000 bc . In Europe, millet was reported in Early Neolithic contexts formed by 6000 bc , but recent radiocarbon dating of a dozen 'early' grains cast doubt on these claims. Archaeobotanical evidence reveals that millet was common in Europe from the 2nd millennium bc , when major …
Multi-proxy analysis of waterlogged preserved Late Neolithic canine excrements
A Study of Dog Coprolite from Late Neolithic Pile-Dwelling Site in Slovenia
More than 5000 years old dog’s coprolite was found during rescue excavation at Črnelnik pile-dwelling site in Slovenia. Although human and dog diets may overlap considerably, the content of the consumed and digested food, consisting of plant and/or animal remains biologically diverse. While the investigated fossil excrement contained many fish head bones, scales and teeth of Cyprinidae family, we believe that we are dealing with an individual tha…
Železnodobno naselje Most na Soči / The Iron Age Settlement at Most na Soči
The second volume on the Iron Age settlement at Most na Soči evaluates from various aspects the structures and small finds that has been presented in the first book. The first section of the book opens with the chronology of the settlement and the architecture in Posočje. The following chapter present the small finds. These include metal artefacts that mainly consist of jewellery, but also tools and other objects that the inhabitants of Most na S…
Comparing different sampling methods in order to reconstruct plant economies at the Eneolithic lake dwelling site Stare gmajne, Slovenia
The results of plant macroremains studies of the Eneolithic (c. 3160–3100 cal BC) lakeshore settlement at Stare gmajne on the Ljubljansko barje in Slovenia are presented. Archaeobotanical material was collected in two different ways: (1) systematic surface sampling from the cultural layer, and (2) judgement sampling from an incompletely burnt large loom-weight. The preservation state and the spectra of plant macroremains were different in both ty…
