Human–wildlife interactions are becoming more common as we progress through the Anthropocene. People tend to feed wildlife more regularly as it is often popularised by social media and can counteract their disconnect from the natural world. These interactions impact wildlife behaviour, feeding ecology and zoonotic transmission dynamics. Due to the risks involved, wildlife practitioners seek effective management strategies to protect both visitors…

  • Enhancing mummy ‘palaeobiographies’ through the use of multidisciplinary techniques and approaches

Open Access•Keith White, Davide Chiasserini et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2022•References: 6

Scientific examination of mummies has provided a better understanding of the ancestry, diet, disease, medical practices, mummification processes, culture and society of human populations worldwide and from different epochs. However, many examinations have been invasive and/or destructive, leading to current-day concerns among archaeologists and mummy custodians about this methodology. Multidisciplinary approaches, notably minimally invasive biops…

Sir William Flinders Petrie (the grandson of Captain Matthew Flinders who explored the coast of Australia between 1797 and 1803) had a brilliant career as an archaeologist that spanned five decades, and his contribution to the subject in developing scientific methodologies for excavation is unparallelled. Initially, it was Amelia B. Edwards, a founder of The Egypt Exploration Fund in London, who recognised Petrie’s genius, and ensured that he was…

  • Raman Spectroscopic Analysis of Ancient Egyptian Pigments

Open Access•A Rosalie David, Anna David et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2001•Cited by: 14

The application of FT‐Raman spectroscopy and visible Raman microscopy to the non‐destructive analysis of pigment specimens excavated from Tell el Amarna by Flinders Petrie in the 1890s has provided information about the chemical composition of the materials used by XVIIIth Dynasty artists in the New Kingdom at the time of King Akhenaten, c. 1340 bc. Comparison of the Raman spectra of the samples labelled ‘red and yellow ochre’ with documented, ar…

  • Benefits and Disadvantages of Some Conservation Treatments for Egyptian Mummies

Open Access•A Rosalie David, Anna David•ARTICLE•Chungara•2001•Cited by: 1

Mummified remains and associated artifacts are fragile and vulnerable to several types of deterioration, including those factors which result from environmental conditions, physical damage and damage caused by previous inadequate conservation attempts. This paper considers the benefits and disadvantages of the conservation treatments in relation to the preservation of DNA in mummified remains

  • Years of Schistosomiasis in Egypt

Open Access•A Rosalie David, Anna David•ARTICLE•Chungara•2000

The evolution of disease is one of medicine's most challenging questions. This paper considers the epidemiology of schistosomiasis in Egypt over a 5000 year period. Evidence from mummies demonstrates the presence of this disease in ancient Egypt, and several diagnostic laboratory methods are currently being developed and used to examine the palaeopathology of schistosomiasis in the mummies. This data will be compared with information being gather…
