Experience of Using an Integrated Archaeological and Geophysical Approach for Searching and Studying Plowed Cemeteries of the Burial Mound Type in the Mariinsk Forest-Steppe
Active works on including archaeological sites into the state cadastral registration system have been done in Kemerovo Region in recent decades. However, this is hampered by large-scale plowing of archaeological sites. In addition, some archaeological sites do not have precise geographical references. In order to enhance searching and identifying the boundaries of such objects, comprehensive studies involving the methods of photogrammetry and mag…
The First Results of Remote Sensing Studies of Mounds with “Mustaches” in Northern Kulunda, Southwestern Siberia
In 2019, a group of previously unknown mounds with “mustaches” was discovered in the north of the Kulunda steppe. They are quite unusual: all of the mounds are ground and located on floodplains. In 2023, a set of remote sensing methods (aerial photography, electromagnetic profiling, and electrical resistivity tomography) was used at Karasuk-1 and Troitskoye-1 to assess the design of the mounds and see if additional features were present on their …
The First Results of Remote Sensing Studies of Mounds with “Mustaches” in Northern Kulunda, Southwestern Siberia
Archaeological and Geophysical Research at the New Ground Cemetery of Nechunaevo-3 in the Aleyskaya Steppe
The cultural-chronological collections from a new archaeological site of Nechunaevo-3 located on the high remnant (elban) in the floodplain on the left bank of the lower Aley River are described. During survey and precursory work for geophysical research, a few bronze items of horse harness of the Early Scythian Period (distributor and clasp) were found in the southern part of the remnant. The geomagnetic sounding has shown several anomalies whic…
Unique Cult Complex in Central Baraba
The article discusses the results of 2024 archaeological field season at the site of Tartas-1. The features illustrating various chronological periods and cultures, including the cult complex of Pakhomovo culture and a Neolithic settlement, were explored. Prior to excavations, a geomagnetic survey was conducted in order to reveal the potential archaeological objects at two locations in the northeastern part of the site – one of the areas was loca…
Integrative Geophysical Studies at the Novaya Kurya-1 Cemetery in the Kulunda Steppe
We outline the results of prospection studies at the Novaya Kurya-1 cemetery in the south of Western Siberia, using remote sensing methods such as aerial photography, ground-based magnetometry, high-precision aeromagnetic survey, electromagnetic profi ling, and electrotomography. Original techniques were used to construct relative relief maps, and an inversion of data from ground-based magnetic survey at various altitudes was carried out. The fi …
Integrative Geophysical Studies at the Novaya Kurya-1 Cemetery in the Kulunda Steppe
Results of Archaeological and Geophysical Works at the Novaya Kurya-1 Site in 2021 (Northern Kulunda Steppe)
This article describes the results of integrated archaeological-geophysical works at the Novaya Kurya-1 burial ground in the Northern Kulunda Steppe. The strategy for archaeological research in 2021 was based on the geomagnetic map of the site compiled in 2019. Archaeological study continued the search for the Bronze Age objects and attempted to clarify the chronology of the burial ground. Main excavation pits were made in the southern part of th…
Assessment of Prospects for the Use of Magnetic Surveys for the Study of Archaeological Sites
Purpose. Magnetometry is currently the most popular geophysical technique used for archaeology. The current task for optimization and development of archaeological and geophysical research is to assess the prospects of magnetic exploration within the territory of archaeological sites. In order to develop this subject, the article analyses the experience of archaeological and geophysical works carried out in the Ob-Irtysh interfluves. The research…
New Burial Ground of the Barrow Type Novaya Kurya-1 in the Northern Kulunda Steppes
Results of Archaeological and Geophysical Explorations at the Village of Besh-Ozek (Altai Republic)
Fish Bones in Odino Ritual Complexes at Preobrazhenka-6, Western Siberia
Fish bones from pits near Odino-type human burials at Preobrazhenka-6, the Baraba forest-steppe, are described with regard to methodological issues involved in the analysis of ichthyofauna from archaeological excavations. The bones are diagnosed in terms of age, species, number, and season of fishing. Artifacts found in pits together with fish bones and the arrangement of pits suggest that fi sh were part of ritual practices of the Odino people
