Jewish-Roman cuisine, the traditional food of one of Europe's longest-standing Jewish communities, is among Italy's most distinctive hyper-local repertoires.Gastronomes increasingly acknowledge the importance of Jewish foodways for Italian cuisine, but a few famous "signature dishes" often dominate popular ideas of Jewish food in Italy. In Rome, carciofi alla giuda -deep-fried "Jewish-style" artichokes -have long been used to symbolize the diverse…

Street signs in Italian, Hebrew and Arabic, installed in the twenty-first century, mark Palermo's former Jewish quarter, over half a millennium since Sicily last had a substantial Jewish population. They recall a medieval Jewish minority, but also symbolise what some consider to be Palermo's essentially pluralistic character. The political messaging of Leoluca Orlando, who served five terms as mayor of Sicily's capital, Palermo (most recently, until 2022), articulates a cosmopolitan vision of local identity. Orlando seeks to emphasise Palermo's 'tolerant' values, invoking the city's history to foster this image, as well as using a variety of rhetorical strategies. He portrays Palermo as having a true 'essence', which is necessarily multicultural. I analyse Orlando's p…

  • Gourmet and the Ghetto

Sean Christian Wyer, Sean Wyer•ARTICLE•Gastronomica The Journal of Food…•2023

In the twenty-first century, Rome’s former Jewish Ghetto has experienced rapid “foodification,” in which food businesses come to dominate a previously residential or mixed-use neighborhood. Why and how has foodification taken place in Rome’s former Ghetto, and how unique is this case? What can this example teach us about foodification as a phenomenon? Foodification is influenced by broader forces, including gentrification, but is also affected by…

  • Sicily Can Be Very Seductive

Open Access•Margaret Renata Neil, Sean Christian Wyer•ARTICLE•The Italianist•2023•Cited by: 1

This article examines how, in the second series of The White Lotus (2022), Sicily is portrayed as a backdrop for wealthy North Americans to live out touristic fantasies. This relies on a stereotypical portrayal of Sicily as a repository of 'pre-modern' gender roles and racial dynamics. The Sicilian setting facilitates the series' critique of white, male privilege. Although the series uses irony to satirize North American attitudes towards, and be…
