  • Moral Outrage Predicts the Virality of Petitions for Change on Social Media, But Not the Number of Signatures They Receive

Open Access•Stefan Leach, Magdalena Formanowicz et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychological and…•2026

Social media is a powerful tool for activists to share their perspectives, but concerns persist that the viral spread of online moral outrage may undermine collective causes in some ways. Analyzing posts on X ( n = 1,286,442) with URLs to petitions on www.change.org ( n = 24,785), we found that expressions of outrage were uniquely associated with the number of times posts were liked and reposted (virality). Mediation analyses showed that outrage …

  • Mobilize Is a Verb

Open Access•Magdalena Formanowicz, Marta Beneda et al.•ARTICLE•Personality and Social Psychology…•2025

In three studies, we investigated the role of linguistic features characterizing texts aiming to mobilize others. In Study 1 ( N = 728), participants produced a leaflet either mobilizing others to engage in an action or expressing their thoughts about that action, and evaluated how action-oriented their text was. Mobilizing texts included more verbs and concrete words, and the presence of these linguistic characteristics was positively linked to …

  • The Role of Agentic Language in Mobilizing Election Candidate Support

    Open Access•Jan Nikadon, C Suitner et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•2025•References: 72

Agency, pertaining to planning and executing actions, is a core feature of the political landscape. Our study examines the temporal dynamics of agentic language in political online discourse during the 2020 U.S. Congressional Elections, spanning 180 days before and after Election Day, and before the Capitol Hill riots. We coded 495,252 messages posted by Democratic and Republican candidates on Twitter for agentic language, which was more prevalen…

  • Riot Like a Girl? Gender-Stereotypical Associations Boost Support for Feminist Online Campaigns

    Open Access•Marta Witkowska, Marta Beneda et al.•ARTICLE•Sex Roles•2024•References: 22

The current study examined whether congruence with gender stereotypes is associated with support for online feminist campaigns. In Study 1 ( N tweets = 510,000), we investigated how two real-world movements (i.e., #metoo and #sexstrike) were viewed in terms of adhering to the traditional feminine stereotype of high warmth/communion and low competence/agency, as per language used in the tweets posted within each campaign. We found that the #metoo …

  • The verb–self link

    Open Access•Patrick P Weis, Jan Nikadon et al.•ARTICLE•Psychonomic Bulletin & Review•2022

Agency is defined as the ability to assign and pursue goals. Given people’s focus on achieving their own goals, agency has been found to be strongly linked to the self. In two studies ( N = 168), we examined whether this self–agency link is visible from a linguistic perspective. As the preferred grammatical category to convey agency is verbs, we hypothesize that, in the Implicit Association Test (IAT), verbs (vs. nouns) would be associated more s…

  • Constructing Pseudowords with Constraints on Morphological Features - Application for Polish Pseudonouns and Pseudoverbs

Open Access•Joanna Daria Dołżycka, Jan Nikadon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psycholinguistic…•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 41

Pseudowords allow researchers to investigate multiple grammatical or syntactic aspects of language processing. In order to serve that purpose, pseudoword stimuli need to preserve certain properties of real language. We provide a Python-based pipeline for the generation of pseudoword stimuli that sound/read naturally in a given language. The pseudowords are designed to resemble real words and clearly indicate their grammatical class for languages …

  • The levels of perceptual processing and the neural correlates of increasing subjective visibility

Open Access•Marek Binder, Krzysztof Gociewicz et al.•ARTICLE•Consciousness and Cognition•2017
