    This article presents a case study of two Habsburg ethnographers, Wenzel Wabruschek-Blumenbach (1791–1847) and Friedrich Umlauft (1844–1923). It seeks to classify their works, Neuestes Gemälde der Oesterreichischen Monarchie (1832/1837) and Die Österreichisch-Ungarische Monarchie (1876/1897), within the context of nationalization tendencies during the long 19th century.
