Waldemar Jochelson’s photographic collections from the Jesup Expedition are stored in the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York and in the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Russian Academy of Sciences (MAE RAS) in St Petersburg. The Jesup photo collection from the AMNH also includes some photographs from the Sibiryakov expedition, and the Jesup collection from the MAE RAS is significantly smaller than the American one.…

On the basis of museum collections, field records, photographic and video recordings made in the 20th to early 21st centuries, a reindeer riding saddle with flaps, typical of the eastern Evenki, is analyzed. The article discusses three significant innovations that have occurred in the culture of the nomad Evens of the Magadan region over the past 80 years: sledge (1930s), reindeer dogs (1940–50s) and tractors (1960s — 1970s). The causes and sources of these borrowings are traced, as well as the resulting systemic cumulative effect. This article is an endeavour to give a portrait of the outstanding Russian emigrant scholar Sergei Shirokogoroff (1887–1939) as an anthropologist on the basis of his letters to the well-known Soviet sinologist V. M. Alekseev (1881–1951). The letters relate to the period 1926–1932 and were written in the Chinese towns of Amoy (now Xiamen), Canton (Guangzhou), Yunnanfu (now Kunming), and Peking.
