Richard F. Salisbury, Reflections on the Integrity of Theory and Praxis
Richard Salisbury pursued an exceptionally productive career as a scholar, teacher, administrator, applied social scientist, and public figure. By finding a voice and a language with which to speak with coherence to many readerships, his studies provide a bold and innovative model for continued professional elaboration. A core of the possibility for a renewed profession was exemplified in his integrity expressed in a commitment to applying anthro…
The Enduring Pursuit
This chapter examines models that have sought to characterize the distinctive features of hunter-gatherer societies that distinguish them from small-scale agricultural or pastoral societies. The survey shows that distinctive features have clustered around questions of land and resource use, and around concomitant social institutions. The main difference between hunters and agriculturalists, Meillassoux argued, is that for the former land is the "…
Co-management and Indigenous Communities
I n recent decades, there has been a profusion of new decentralized institutions for resource management. They have developed as a result of the efforts made by state managers and local resource users to address an array of crises, conflicts and dilemmas surrounding common property resources. Through processes that are variously described as "co-management" or "co-operative management" or "community-based management" managers at the state level a…
In the Way of Development
This book brings together very insightful analyses of indigenous experience and strategies in the context of globalization from several continents and a number of theoretical perspectives. There are broad similarities making this a common struggle but the solutions arise from people solving problems in local contexts.

Afterword
Hunting territories have been and remain central to struggles of northern Algonquian peoples for governance of their lands, to the changes they envision, and for the responses they make when others enter their lands. Hunting territories are also envisioned by some nation-state governments and resource developers as means to disrupt Indigenous governance, communities and tenures to facilitate colonial regimes of control. What happened in this regi…
