  • Childhood self-regulation and life outcomes in a 50-year follow-up study

Open Access•Brittany E Evans, Joakim Berglund et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

Self-regulation is integral to human well-being. Previous research established associations between self-regulation and life outcomes, although mostly based on cross-sectional or longitudinal research with relatively short follow-up periods. We aimed to investigate associations between self-regulation during childhood and low education, psychiatric diagnosis, conviction for non-violent and violent crime, and premature mortality up to 50 years lat…

  • Perspectives on Violent Extremism: Insights from Swedish Population Registers in a Global Comparison

Open Access•Amir Rostami, Hernan Mondani et al.•ARTICLE•Terrorism and Political Violence•2025

This study explores the characteristics of individuals affiliated with violent extremist milieus in Sweden, focusing on far-right, far-left, and Islamic extremist milieus. Firstly, by using a compilation of law enforcement and other Swedish population registers, we describe these milieus along a range of demographic, socioeconomic, criminal, mental health, and familial indicators. We then compare Swedish extremists to extremists globally. Our fin…

  • Changes in Immigrant Population Prevalence and High Violent Crime Rates in Swedish Municipalities

    Open Access•Jerzy Sarnecki, Amber L Beckley et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2025•References: 30

Global evidence indicates minimal connection between immigration and crime. Nordic research, however, has been generally carried out on individuals and shows that immigrants are over-represented in crime. This has led to claims that high crime rates are due to immigration. We directed our study towards these claims by analyzing immigrant population prevalence, defined as the percent of foreign-born individuals, and violent crime in Swedish munici…

  • Everything, everywhere, all at once: US vaccine distribution for Covid-19

    Open Access•Jerzy Sarnecki•ARTICLE•Veritas (Porto Alegre)•2024

The development and early distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine was both a singular achievement and missed opportunity. In this paper, I argue that the consensus regarding the goals of an effective and morally responsible vaccine distribution program were often eschewed in favor of a reversion to the problematic pre-pandemic healthcare distribution practices. I examine the goals of vaccine planning in terms of the public health, economic and socia…

  • Lone threats: A register-based study of Swedish lone actors

Open Access•A Rostami, Hernan Mondani et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024•References: 42

This study investigates 30 lone actors in Sweden with a register-based design using a group of male lone actors and two reference groups: same-sex siblings and other male violent extremists. We compare lone actors to the reference groups along social background, criminal background, and co-offending relations (1995 –2016), and mental health (1980–2016). Our results show that lone actors are primarily born in Sweden to two Swedish-born parents. Th…

  • A Life-Course Analysis of Engagement in Violent Extremist Groups

Open Access•Christoffer Carlsson, Amir Rostami et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•2020•References: 47

In this exploratory study, individuals’ processes of engagement in violent extremist groups are analysed by drawing from criminological life-course theory and narrative-based understandings of crime. Based on interviews with individuals who have participated in violent extremism, it is suggested that the process of engagement consists of three steps: (1) a weakening of informal social controls, followed by (2) an interaction with individuals in p…

  • The Swedish Mujahideen: An Exploratory Study of 41 Swedish Foreign Fighters Deceased in Iraq and Syria

Open Access•A Rostami, Joakim Sturup et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Conflict and Terrorism•2018•Cited by: 10

This study analyzes the demographics, criminality, and network relations of forty-one deceased Swedish foreign fighters. Our results show that most of the deceased Swedish foreign fighters were on average just under 26 years old when they died. Concerning network relations, nineteen out of the forty-one foreign fighters had at least one relationship (next-of-kin or friend) with another deceased foreign fighter. Two thirds were previously suspecte…

  • An Introduction to Life-Course Criminology

Christoffer Carlsson, Jerzy Sarnecki•BOOK•An Introduction to Life-Course…•2016

Most people engage in crime at some point in their lives, but why does almost everybody stop soon after? And, why do a small number of offenders persist in crime? These two questions constitute the core of the field often known as life-course criminology. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to life-course criminology. It covers the dominant theories and methodologies in the field and equips you with all you need to succeed in your stu…

  • Crime as a Price of Inequality: The Gap in Registered Crime between Childhood Immigrants, Children of Immigrants and Children of Native Swedes

Martin Hällsten, Ryszard Szulkin et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•2013•Cited by: 12•References: 22

We examine the gap in registered crime between the children of immigrants and the children of native Swedes. We follow all individuals who completed compulsory schooling during the period 1990–93 in the Stockholm Metropolitan area (N = 63,462) up to their thirties and analyse how family of origin and neighbourhood segregation during adolescence, subsequent to arriving in Sweden, influence the gap in recorded crimes. For males, we are able to expl…

  • Tecendo uma teia: Aquisição de conceitos e papel inferencial

    Open Access•Jerzy Sarnecki, John Sarnecki•ARTICLE•Veritas (Porto Alegre)•2012•References: 1
