“Hold on, I’ll connect you to a human agent”: Recipient design, repair, and their impact on progressivity in human-chatbot conversations
This study analyzes recipient design in handover conversations involving customers, customer service chatbots, and human agents, and examines how repair strategies initiated by chatbots and human agents impact conversational progressivity. These text-based conversations were analyzed using Conversation Analysis. Findings show customers formulate their request and subsequent messages concisely when communicating with a chatbot (pre-handover), but …
Conversational Polarization: Eight Key Considerations for Communication Scientists
Previous research has largely overlooked how polarization is constituted through conversations. We introduce the concept of “conversational polarization,” highlighting how polarization is socially constructed in conversations about contentious issues. We present eight considerations for communication scientists to study polarization. Theoretical considerations include: (a) positioning research within the interactional paradigm, (b) considering in…

All but naive: Patrolling epistemic territories in radio phone-ins
In this paper, we analysed Dutch and British radio phone-in conversations on ADHD and vaccination between radio hosts and callers, focusing on how interactants dispute the authority of both scientific and experiential claims to expertise. We found that interactants never challenged the authority of science and experience as such, but resisted their normative relevance. When callers offered expertise in the form of personal experience, hosts chall…
When science meets society: The role of unsolicited self-disclosures in conversations between researchers and community members
Recently, there have been calls for a new approach to science communication, emphasizing relationship building between researchers and the public. To date, what relationship building looks like in practice remains unclear. In this conversation-analytic study, we analyze conversations between researchers from different disciplines and community members to examine relationship building in real life. We analyzed a recurring pattern in these conversa…
Shelving Issues: Patrolling the Boundaries of Democratic Discussion in Public Meetings
Democratic participation is widely viewed as a crucial underpinning of legitimate governance; however, little is known about how this participation is practically accomplished. This study contributes to a better understanding of what democratic citizenship encompasses in actual practices of public engagement. Using conversation analysis and discursive psychology, we analyze interactions between government officials and citizens in Dutch public me…
Going against the interactional tide: The accomplishment of dialogic moments from a conversation analytic perspective
This article addresses a vital concern in current society by showing what participants themselves may treat as ways to transcend their differences. Actors’ shared understanding has been of longstanding interest across the social sciences. Conversation analysis (CA) treats the procedural infrastructure of interaction as the basis for participants to manage intersubjectivity. The field of dialogue studies has made occasions in which people transfor…
"The turn-by-turn unfolding of "dialogue: Examining participants' orientations to moments of transformative engagement
A central aim of experts, officials, and citizens meeting in the context of policymaking is to organize their encounters in ways that enable them to learn about the other's perspectives - that is, to engage in “dialogue”. However, what is less understood are the interactional trajectories over which these transformative engagements are pursued. Using conversation analysis and drawing on a corpus of recorded Dutch public meetings on livestock farm…
Withholding consent: How citizens resist expert responses by positioning themselves as ‘the ones to be convinced’
This paper examines public meetings in the Netherlands where experts and officials interact with local residents on the human health effects of livestock farming. Using Conversation Analysis, we reveal a ‘weapon of the weak’: a practice by which the residents resist experts’ head start in information meetings. It is shown how residents draw on the given question-answer format to challenge experts and pursue an admission of, for example, methodolo…
