  • Goals Based VS. Utilization Focused Evaluation in Two Rapid Ethnographic Assessments

    Marion Lundy Dobbert•ARTICLE•Practicing Anthropology•2000

One of the main reasons I chose to write this article was to attempt to find a scientific standard for judging the types of studies labeled ‘rapid and reliable research.’ I also wanted to know for ethical reasons if the any or all of the rapid research projects I have done over the years with my classes could be considered scientifically valid. I have believed that these studies did produce reliable data that taken together with the proper theori…

  • Community Studies as Formative Evaluations for Citizens

    Marion Lundy Dobbert•ARTICLE•Practicing Anthropology•1989

Evaluation has been defined by Blaine Worthen and J. R. Sanders (1973, Educational Evaluation: Theory and Practice. Worthington, Ohio: C.A. Jones Publishing Company, p. 19) as making a "determination of the worth of a thing." The thought of evaluating a community is one that, at first hearing, is likely to give any anthropologist a cold chill. But actually, communities are evaluated all the time; the evolutionary socioeconomic processes of a regi…

  • An Electronic Office Design for the Busy Applied Anthropologist

    Marion Lundy Dobbert•ARTICLE•Practicing Anthropology•1987

Over the past year I have done all of my work as an anthropologist in an electronic office. This work includes analyzing complex field data, designing data gathering forms, writing articles for publication, illustrating the articles with various diagrams, lecturing, grading papers, consulting, and carrying on the usual correspondence of a university professor. Before I first sat down in this electronic office on the day that I got a Macintosh 512…

    Open Access•Marion Lundy Dobbert, Rivka A Eisikovits et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Education Quarterly•1984•Cited by: 1

The issues involved in creating and testing an anthropologically adequate theory of cultural transmission are addressed in this article. The authors introduce a field guide based on a general systems approach and a body of data gathered with it from Israel, the midwestern United States, and Zinacantan. An analytic method is described and used to compare cultural transmission processes as they affect sixto twelveyear-olds. The analysis, which incl…

  • An Application of Dimensional Analysis in Cultural Anthropology

    Open Access•Marion Lundy Dobbert, Dennis P Mcguire et al.•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1984•Cited by: 3•References: 21

Lawlike generalizations can be developed only for variables exhibiting strict constancy in concept formulation. By considering anthropology a space and its basic concepts as dimensions and borrowing from ecology, cultural materialism, and social, political, and cultural anthropology, we develop a 14-dimensional space defined by 42 scaled variables. Dimensional analysis performed yields 14 equations and 28 dimensionless expressions that satisfy th…
