  • Centering Community Engagement in a Hypertension Clinical Trial

Open Access•Stephanie Hart, Doyle M Cummings et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Racial and Ethnic…•2025•Referências: 4

Black Americans residing in rural communities are often excluded from clinical trials for hypertension, despite having a high prevalence of the disease and frequent complications. This report describes our research team's experience to support recruitment and retention of rural Black patients with uncontrolled hypertension in the southeastern United States in a cluster-randomized clinical trial. While the focus of this report is on enrollment and…

    Anna M Kucharska-Newton, Jacquie R Halladay et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2023•Referências: 28

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We examined transitional care management within 90 days and 1 year following discharge home among acute stroke and transient ischemic attack patients from the Comprehensive Post-Acute Stroke Services (COMPASS) Study, a cluster-randomized pragmatic trial of early supported discharge conducted in 41 hospitals (40 hospital units) in North Carolina, United States. • The association between neighborhood social and economic environment and prevalent diabetes in urban and rural communities

Open Access•Jalal Uddin, Gargya Malla et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2022

Participants living in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods had a higher diabetes prevalence in each urban/rural community type and these associations were only partly explained by individual-level sociodemographic factors. In addition to addressing individual-level factors, identifying neighborhood characteristics and how they operate across urban and rural settings may be helpful for informing interventions that target chronic health conditions

  • Impact of Distress Reduction on Behavioral Correlates and A1C in African American Women with Uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes

    Doyle M Cummings, Lesley D Lutes et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity & Disease•2017

Among rural African American women, reductions in diabetes-related distress may be associated with lower A1C and improvements in self-efficacy, self-care behaviors, and medication adherence

  • Perceived Social Standing, Medication Nonadherence, and Systolic Blood Pressure in the Rural South

    Open Access•Doyle M Cummings, Jia‐Rong Wu et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2016

PURPOSE: Little is known about how perceived social standing versus traditional socioeconomic characteristics influence medication adherence and blood pressure (BP) among African American and white patients with hypertension in the rural southeastern United States. METHODS: Perceived social standing, socioeconomic characteristics, self-reported antihypertensive medication adherence, and BP were measured at baseline in a cohort of rural African Am…

  • Lessons Learned From Implementing Health Coaching in The Heart Healthy Lenoir Hypertension Study

Katrina E Donahue, Jim Tillman et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in community health…•2016

    Open Access•Crystal W Cené, Jacqueline R Halladay et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2016•Citada por: 4•Referências: 25

We examine the cross-sectional association between subjective social status and self-rated physical and mental health functioning in 518 Black and White patients enrolled in a community-based hypertension control research study. We found that (1) subjective social status, measured using both a proximal and distal referent group, was positively associated with physical and mental health functioning scores independent of educational level, househol…

  • Confronting Disparities in Diabetes Care

Open Access•Paul Bray, Debra Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2005

CONTEXT: Diabetes mellitus and its complications disproportionately affect minority citizens in rural communities, many of whom have limited access to comprehensive diabetes management services. PURPOSE: To explore the efficacy of combining care management and interdisciplinary group visits for rural African American patients with diabetes mellitus. METHODS: In the intervention practice, an advanced practice nurse visited the practice weekly for …

  • Disparities in Mammography Screening in Rural Areas

Open Access•Doyle M Cummings, Lauren Whetstone et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2002

The extent to which targeted mammography programs have impacted women in rural areas is not well defined. We investigated mammography screening rates among 843 women age 50 and over from a population‐based sample in four predominantly rural eastern North Carolina counties. We examined age, race, education level, county of residence, health insurance, and the self‐reported completion of mammography in the past year using contingency tables and log…

  • Screening for Diabetic Retinopathy in Rural Areas

Open Access•Doyle M Cummings, Susan Morrissey et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2001

Diabetic retinopathy is a common cause of blindness, and screening can identify the disease at an earlier, more treatable stage. However, rural individuals with diabetes may have limited access to needed eye care. The objective of this project was to demonstrate the feasibility of a diabetic retinopathy screening program using a state‐of‐the‐art nonmydriatic digital fundus imaging system. The study involved a series of patients screened in primar…
