BACKGROUND: Surgery is an indispensable component of a health system, yet financing its delivery faces significant financing challenges. This study seeks to address the research question: What is the financial contribution of philanthropy to the delivery of surgical care in low and middle-income countries (LMICs)? METHODOLOGY: This study combines a qualitative and a quantitative component to examine the magnitude of philanthropic contributions in…
Effective altruism in global health
The effective altruism (EA) movement has seen explosive growth within the last decade, resulting in the allocation of hundreds of millions of dollars in funding towards altruistic causes. The movement aims to maximise good and has identified global health initiatives as especially promising. In this paper, we first present a brief overview of the philosophy behind EA and concede the importance of efficacy in the context of the scarcity of resourc…
Conscientious objection

Perceptions of surgery in Nicaragua
Barriers to medical care include lack of proper infrastructure and equipment; however, cultural barriers to care and poorly perceived quality of care, especially surgical care, can also negatively impact a patient’s utilization of healthcare services. This study used patient-survey data from three unique municipalities in Nicaragua to examine pre-hospital barriers to care, including previous experience with healthcare, and how those experiences i…
Scalable policy adoption and sustainable implementation of surgical care in the Americas
On September 29, 2023, the Republic of Ecuador convened a meeting to address surgical system strengthening and urge political leaders to invest in surgical infrastructure. The meeting included experts in health diplomacy, innovative financing, implementation strategy and national surgical plans. The event occurred in parallel with the Sixtieth Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization, Seventy-fifth session of the World Health Org…
To advance global surgery and anaesthesia, train more advocates
Voices beyond the Operating Room
This study was designed to examine the effect of calcitonin gene related peptide on gastric acid secretion in the rat. Calcitonin gene related peptide (1 pmol-1 nmol/rat) injected intravenously inhibited basal gastric acid secretion in awake, freely moving rats. Calcitonin gene related peptide decreased gastric secretion stimulated by histamine, pentagastrin, or bethanecol in anaesthetised rats. The inhibitory effect was immediate and most pronou…
