Deviance, Crime, and the Greying of America
This essay offers some conjectures about the nature and forms of deviance and criminality that are likely to be encountered in the decades ahead, as the 'greying' of America continues. Traditional notions centered about the study of societal forms of deviance have become obsolete. Moreover, behavioral diversity of many forms has become so commonplace in recent years that social labeling or processual conceptions of deviance are in need of revisio…

techniques of cross-cultural comparison and holistic analysis, and the data-collection techniques of intimate ethnographic fieldwork. In the future I think we will be able to look to other major contributions: by archaeologists, physical anthropologists, and anthropological linguists, and in such theoretical fields as cultural evolution, which is de-emphasizing cultural relativity and maintaining that crosscultural comparisons should extend to ea…

Say, Whatever Became of Maurice Parmelee, Anyway
This paper outlines the career of Maurice F. Parmelee, sociologist, government official, nudist, and author of thirteen books, including the first American criminology text (1918). The contents of the latter are examined and contrasts with contemporary textbooks are noted. Parmelee's career is an anomoly, for although he published abundantly, he faded into sociological obscurity. Some conjecture is offered about scholarly career paths generally, …

Observations on the Study of Crime Causation
Differential association theory, typological views, and other approaches to crime causation are noted. Situational and genetichistorical factors in lawbreaking are identified and contrasted. Differential Treatment of Delinquents and Interpersonal Maturity Levels Theory: A Critique
The trend toward the use of diagnostic typologies in corrections is noted. The I-Levels (Interpersonal Maturity Levels) system employed in California is outlined in detail, including its applications to criminality. A number of questions are raised about the general validity of the theory, particularly as applied to offenders. In addition, several treatment projects are discussed in which this system has been utilized, with attention to limitatio…
Crime and Punishment: A Study in Social Attitudes
The relationships between punitive sanctions directed at offenders and public sentiments about appropriate penalties are in need of investigation. Previous studies dealing with this subject are noted. This paper reports on an investigation in California in which citizens indicated the degree of punishment they felt to be appropriate for 20 different crimes. The most visible and coercive offenses received the most severe penalty choices and these …

Prospects and Problems of Delinquent Typology
Set-Breaking as a Learned Response
72 undergraduates were given an experimental problem structured to provide competing associations which should interfere with successful solution. Half of this group was given prior training in the solution of problems whose answers are commonly considered to be “unconventional” in an attempt to engender a “set-breaking set” which would facilitate solution of the experimental problem. The trained group did appear superior in time to solution and …
