  • Coming to Terms With the Invective Latency of Ethnographic Relations

    Open Access•Heike Greschke•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2024

In this article, I outline the framework of (auto)ethnographic positioning analysis. Using the example of an unpleasant field experience, I first develop the “metainvective positioning circle,” a heuristic model that I use to address the crisis of ethnography, its consequences for methodological development, and its implications for contemporary ethnographic practice. In the further sections, I outline how (auto)ethnographic positioning analysis …

  • “Positioning” Analysis With Autoethnography—Epistemic Explorations of Self-Reflexivity

    Open Access•Heike Greschke•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2024

(Auto)ethnographic positioning analysis is a new approach that mobilizes the demarcation between evocative and analytic autoethnography and combines the strengths of both with positioning theory. It is considered a suitable methodology for addressing the ongoing crisis of ethnography, understood as a continuing expression of the moral explosiveness of ethnographic relations in a socially divided and connected world. This introduction outlines the…

  • Wie ist das denn in deinem Heimatland?“ Kommunikative Muster invektiver Kulturvergleiche im Orientierungskurs

    Open Access•Youmna Fouad, Heike Greschke•ARTICLE•Kulturwissenschaftliche Zeitschrift•2021

The German Orientation Course is considered as one of the most important measures of integration policy in Germany. It is a mandatory German language and cultural course dedicated to refugees and immigrants. It aims to provide knowledge about the German political system and certain ‘cultural’ German values. This article examines the Orientation Course as an intercultural encounter, as a place which is institutionally and politically framed and al…

  • Idioms of polymediated practices and the techno-social accomplishment of co-presence in transnational families

Open Access•Heike Greschke, Heike Monika Greschke•ARTICLE•Pragmatics and Society•2021

Drawing on data from a comparative ethnographic study on media usage in transnational families, this paper contributes to a reappraisal of polymedia theory. Two main theoretical assumptions are reconsidered. First, it is demonstrated why the equal availability assumption has to be revised in light of the complex interactions between the corporeal, communicative and social mobilities which together constitute transnational migration. Second, it is…

  • Grounding Global Climate Change

Open Access•Heike Greschke, Julia Tischler•EDITOR•BOOK•Grounding Global Climate Change•2015

This book traces the evolution of climate change research, which, long dominated by the natural sciences, now sees greater involvement with disciplines studying the socio-cultural implications of global warming. While most of social climate change research focuses on how people deal with environmental stresses and possible ways of adaptation, this volume foregrounds the question: What are the theoretical and methodological challenges of investiga…
