Performance of cognitive screening tools in detecting possible dementia among older males in custody in Canada: A pilot study
BACKGROUND: Older individuals represent a growing demographic in correctional institutions worldwide, many of whom are living with complex health and social needs. One area of concern is that older people in custody are at increased risk of developing, or are currently living with, neurocognitive issues such as dementia. This pilot study examined the preliminary diagnostic performance of several cognitive screening tools for detecting suspected c…
Lifetime and Jail-Specific Suicidal Ideation: Prevalence and Correlates in a Sample of People in Jail in the United States
Despite high suicide mortality in U.S. jails, there is limited research into precursors for suicide in this population, such as suicidal ideation. The current study examined the prevalence and correlates of lifetime and jail-specific suicidal ideation among a sample of 196 individuals (137 men) in custody in a U.S. jail. Nearly half the sample had reported lifetime suicidal ideation (45%), whereas 30% had reported jail-specific suicidal ideation.…
Medical Chart Review to Explore Suicidal and Self-Harm Thoughts and Behavior Among Psychiatric Inpatients
Suicide and self-harm events are elevated in psychiatric inpatient populations. In this study, health data were retrospectively collected from the medical records of 183 patients (97 civil and 86 forensic) who had resided in, or been admitted to, a public psychiatric hospital in Saskatchewan, Canada from April 1 to December 31, 2021. Descriptive and inferential analyses were conducted to estimate prevalence and correlates of (non-fatal) suicide a…
Reducing the “Justice Gap” Through Data for Systemic Change: Using Multiple-Perspective Legal-Needs Surveys to Improve Person-Centered Justice
Recognizing the justice data deficit across Canada, we undertook a multi-faceted project to better understand access to justice (A2J) issues and legal needs of individuals and communities in Saskatchewan. This paper describes the 2021-2022 Saskatchewan Legal Needs Survey, a multiple perspective service provider legal-needs survey intended to complement user-centred surveys and designed to capture the experiences of justice system users via percep…
Older people in custody in a forensic psychiatric facility, prevalence of dementia, and community reintegration needs: An exploratory analysis
The Heterogeneity of Suicide Attempters: An Analysis of Single- and Repeat-Suicide Attempters Among People in Custody
Suicide attempters represent a heterogeneous group, whereby repeat-suicide attempters possess a differing risk profile compared with single-suicide attempters. Using cross-sectional data from a nationally representative sample of 18,185 people in custody in the United States, the current study compared repeat-suicide attempters ( n = 1,549) to single-suicide attempters ( n = 1,146), and compared single- and repeat-suicide attempters to suicide id…
