  • Variability of limb muscle size in young men

Open Access•Taku Wakahara, Kazumi Takeshita et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2009

The purpose of this study was to determine the interindividual variability of the upper and lower limb muscle size in young men. Subjects were 655 Japanese men aged 18-39 years. They were sedentary and mildly to highly active individuals, including college athletes of various sports. Muscle thicknesses at each of the anterior and posterior portions of the upper arm, thigh, and lower leg were measured using B-mode ultrasonography. Interindividual …

  • Difference in Abdominal Muscularity at the Umbilicus Level between Young and Middle-aged Men

Open Access•Noriko I Tanaka, Masafumi Yamada et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of PHYSIOLOGICAL…•2007

This study aimed to examine how the muscularity of the abdomen at the umbilicus level differs between sedentary middle-aged and young men. Magnetic resonance imaging was applied to determine the cross-sectional areas of skeletal muscle, subcutaneous fat, and interperitoneal tissue in 43 middle-aged (40 58yrs) and 38 young (21-29 yrs) men. The cross-sectional area of the skeletal muscle was analyzed as the sum of those of the rectus abdominis, abd…

  • Human skeletal muscle size and architecture

Open Access•Yasuo Kawakami, Takashi Abe et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2006

Seven hundred and eleven women and men (aged 3-94 years, including normal individuals and highly trained bodybuilders) were tested for the thickness and pennation angles of their triceps brachii (TB), vastus lateralis (VL), and gastrocnemius medialis (GM) muscles. The variations of muscle thickness and pennation angles were largest in TB (6-66 mm and 5-55 degrees), followed by VL (8-45 mm and 7-33 degrees) and GM (11-36 mm and 12-33 degrees), and…
